Failing vision and vision loss are often seen as inevitable parts of aging, but with innovation and a stronger focus on eye care, we can challenge this perception. Despite the increased risk of vision loss with age, 90% of cases are treatable or preventable, offering hope to millions in Asia facing vision impairment. In my latest article for the World Economic Forum (@WEF), I outline five priorities to accelerate our progress towards UN Vision 2030. Have a look here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ezxxTDGh

October marks Blindness Awareness Month, a vital time to elevate awareness about blindness and the advancements in vision research. Since 2009, this month has been dedicated to: 👁️ Education: Sharing the latest research, treatments, and innovations in preventing and managing blindness. As advocates for vision science, NAEVR is committed to highlighting the critical role that federally funded research plays in developing new therapies and improving quality of life for those with vision impairments. 💡 Inspiration: Showcasing remarkable stories of individuals who, despite visual impairments, are achieving incredible things. NAEVR is proud to support the work of researchers and advocates who are leading efforts to enhance the lives of those affected by vision loss. 📣 Advocacy: We work tirelessly to secure funding for the National Eye Institute (NEI) and Department of Defense (DoD) research programs to ensure continued progress. Blindness Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of advocating for policies and funding that enable groundbreaking research and support for individuals with visual impairments. Join us in raising awareness and driving change for better eye health and vision research this October. #BlindnessAwarenessMonth #VisionResearch

May is Healthy Vision Month! 👀 It's a time to celebrate the gift of sight and remind ourselves of the crucial role vision plays in our lives. While we focus on maintaining healthy vision and scheduling regular eye exams, it's also essential to acknowledge the significance of vision research and funding for organizations like the National Eye Institute (NEI). https://bit.ly/3wpkPxZ Vision research not only helps us understand how our eyes work but also leads to groundbreaking discoveries in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. Funding for NEI supports this vital research, enabling scientists and clinicians to develop innovative solutions to preserve and enhance vision for people of all ages. So, as we prioritize our eye health this month, let's also advocate for continued investment in vision research and support organizations like NEI. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the resources and treatments needed to maintain healthy vision throughout their lives. #HealthyVisionMonth #NEIFunding

Lab space for your head space. This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, ARC is taking a bold step forward in recognising and valuing the diverse talents and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to the science and innovation sectors. We believe that by creating lab environments tailored to support all neurotypes, we can unlock unparalleled levels of creativity and discovery. Our commitment to neurodiversity goes beyond acknowledgement; it's about actionable change. That's why we've launched a comprehensive survey aimed at understanding the unique needs and preferences of individuals in scientific workspaces, both neurodivergent and neurotypical. Your insights will directly inform the design of our future lab spaces, ensuring they are inclusive, supportive, and conducive to groundbreaking work. Join us in making a difference. Click the link to participate in our anonymous survey and be part of building neuroinclusive lab spaces that cater to every mind. Together, we can foster an environment where every scientist has the opportunity to thrive. How are we shaped by the environment around us? In what way does “nature” vs “nurture” impact the brain over a lifetime -- or even across future generations? In this pair of talks by two experts in distinct but related fields, our speakers will explore epigenetics, this fascinating interplay of genes and the environment, through development, learning, and addiction. Bianca Jones Marlin, PhD, Herbert and Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Cell Research at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute, will share her research on transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, the phenomenon in which biological responses to stressors can be passed down from parents to offspring. How is the brain altered by stress, and how might those changes be beneficial or harmful for future generations? Yasmin Hurd, PhD, Director of the Addiction Institute within the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health System, the Ward Coleman Chair of Translational Neuroscience, and Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, will then discuss her work studying the effects of drug exposure (in particular cannabis) during crucial periods of brain development, such as the prenatal and adolescent years, and the impact of environmental stress. But could drug exposure before pregnancy even begins still influence the next generation? Following the two talks, Paige Greenwood, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, will moderate a discussion and Q&A with the speakers. Audience questions are welcomed, either submitted during registration or live during the event. #MentalHealthDay2024 https://lnkd.in/enR3EdE3

It's #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek, a week to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. We're proud to fund groups like Ascape, Positive Path Foundation, People First Dorset, People First Forum and Access Dorset who work so hard to do this. Up to 20 per cent of the population has a neurological difference. Instead of labelling people with deficits or disorders, when we use the term neurodiversity, groups like these take a balanced view of an individual’s unique strengths and challenges. Many ‘challenges’ neurodivergent people face are more to do with the environment and systems they are placed in. Let's all do more to think differently, be more accepting and celebrate our differences.⭐️
