When I began my career in Mumbai three decades ago, I held a glamorous image of the IT industry and envisioned working in cubicles. However, the reality was quite different, as we were packed into a large room resembling a fish tank, with around twenty programmers sharing one space, devoid of any privacy. #ITIndustry #WorkEnvironment #CareerBeginnings Similar to Mumbai, space constraints in Tokyo, Japan, pose significant challenges for office layouts. "Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it!" - Dr. Maya Angelou The past 2 days I had the pleasure of attending the CGI's Women in Tech Career Lab webinars. Two sessions that stood out to me include 'Seizing opportunities: mapping your career success' and 'How to ROCK your job application'! Jyothi Visweswaran shared her stories on how she seized opportunities along her career journey, the importance of self-evaluation on your skills to figure out what you enjoy and are good at, and the importance of celebrating your wins no matter how small. I learned that the best way to assess if a job is a good fit is to have a checklist of core criteria (see image below). I also had the opportunity to learn from hiring managers, Kritika Menon Yvonne Hale Madhu Parmar, on how to stand out in my #jobapplication. I learned that summaries are important in #resumes to highlight an applicant's key skills aligned with the role. I am excited to put these learnings into practice! #technology #personaldevelopment #inspiration

I applied for my first job because a close friend of mine and I wanted to work together.   This first job was a Software engineer at Infosys.   There is so much of gyaan giving these days about what are the hot skills you need to pick. Learn this and 2X-3X your salary – says every Youtube or Insta ad ever.   Hot skills are exciting and boost employability - fair. But there is surprisingly less thought into the stuff that hugely influence your actions for finding a job.   We look for the people we know And hope to join a place where some familiarity exists.   Especially in mid-management roles common after MBA, this is what helps in charting out our growth path and trajectory.   A friend or ex-colleague recently joined some place. Someone you know from your school, college, is in the place you saw an opening – you will reach out. Or the best thing – someone you know is looking to build a team   We often focus on too much intelligence but looking up jobs is hugely influenced by the needs of familiarity. Because familiarity begets Comfort.   And this is – Same as Ever. Across ages, across generations.   What can you do – Build your network, grow your ecosystem.   And if you can, try reading Network theory – Especially the concept of dormant connects in your Network who can radically amplify your reach.
