Active Duty friends, do you know what you want to do when you "grow up"?
I highly recommend that you figure out what your dream job is NOW. Do not wait until 6 months before separation/retirement to figure this out. Once you know what that desired goal is, you can start making progress towards making that goal more realistic for whenever you finally stop wearing the cloth of our nation's military.
While many of us have a rough plan on when we think the separation/retirement date will be, things change. The more ready you are for your dream job, the easier it will be to get into that job once you do leave the military.
I started thinking about my transition plan back in 2018 and have been slowly (but surely) stepping toward retirement-ready since then, watching current job posts and trends in the job field I want to be a part of. This has helped me to ensure that the big actions I am taking work well for my future, both in the Navy and outside of it.
I am now not thinking "retirement... what a scary thought with all of the accompanying changes," but am rather thinking "there are so many great opportunities and I am excited to see where and how I will fit in best."
Post-military career, here I come. I am ready and excited to get started!
