Developing innovative financing solutions is key to unlocking accelerated climate action.   I'm vastly proud of the pioneering work The World Bank has undertaken with our partner, Ministerio de Economía y Finanzas, Uruguay to develop IBRD’s first-ever performance-linked loan that directly incentivizes the achievement of ambitious climate goals through built-in financial rewards. Read more in this case study 👉 https://lnkd.in/egzYF-7x   Spanish version here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/djbSn9hH   The award winning $350 million development policy operation, signed recently by Uruguay, is important on multiple fronts:           ✅ Sets up a performance-based interest rate reduction mechanism where Uruguay can save up to $12.5 million by verifiably decreasing the methane emissions intensity from livestock.           ✅ Opens up new possibilities for prioritizing investments in global public goods like climate change mitigation and environmental conservation.           ✅ Marks a tangible way the World Bank is operationalizing its commitments under the Evolution Roadmap to create incentives supporting client efforts to tackle global challenges.   I'm excited at the potential for replicating and scaling this approach. Through close collaboration with the client, project implementation and the country teams, we – including Rodrigo Cabral, James Seward, and Anupurba Roy – played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and optimizing this innovative solution. This pilot operation required the collaboration of many global and regional units and practices within the World Bank and was co-led by the regional Macro, Trade and Investment (MTI) and Environment (ENB) teams, in collaboration with the Country Management Unit, Legal and Finance Partners including us. Why is it difficult to drive private funding to the global south from the global north? The clarity of the The World Bank President Ajay Banga sir shone light on a deep structural problem!🤯 After meeting him at COP28 UAE, I met him again at the inaugural Hamburg Sustainability Conference in Germany last week🌱 While on a panel with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the International Monetary Fund MD Kristalina Georgieva, he spoke about 5 issues and one of those stuck with me💸 👉 While most of the world’s wealth is in Dollars 💲, the investment would have to happen in local currencies 👉The ROI again is expected in Dollars 💲 👉This technically means that your ROI is subject to fluctuation based on currency exchange rates which might simply overpower any returns 👉 Exchange rates can move simply based on any number of extraneous variables, because in times of crisis anywhere in the globe, the wealth moves towards the safe haven 💲 👉 This means that wealth creation in the global south has to enormously rely on funding in local currencies and the stability of the economy Additionally, it brings me to the point that the current financial architecture disadvantages developing countries tremendously and our growth and development is ridden with structural challenges! 🌏 Inviting folks from both global north and south to share their views! EIB Investment Report 2023/2024: Government finances need to be more targeted  The European Investment Bank (EIB) released its annual report for 2023/2024, and it's packed with insights on how investments should support the European green and social transition. Here are some key highlights: ✨ Digitalization and Green Transition: Europe maintains a leading role in green technologies, but it lags on digital innovation, compared to the U.S. and China. But what if we told you that ESG impact-neobanks are challenging the norm in Europe by bridging the gap between the digital and impact worlds? Leveraging their innovative approaches is a must-have! 🌱 Decarbonization Imperative: EIB Investment Survey research underscores the pivotal role of public funds in incentivizing businesses to invest in climate adaptation, particularly in vulnerable regions and sectors. An innovative and resourceful way to strengthen the impact of public funds is to ensure that they are deposited in ESG impact focused FIs, which can dtop emissions per deposited euro drop by more than 60%. 🏦 Government finances need to be more targeted: With substantial investment demands, public resources are crucial. Transition plans provide a strategic roadmap for an organisation to realign its assets, operations, and business model to meet climate goals. Although not a novel concept, the specificity and urgency of #climatetransition plans make them crucial for an organisation’s future viability. At the same time, it is also imperative for financial and non-financial firms to include #justtransition perspectives, since they maximise social and economic benefits while effectively managing challenges through dialogue and respecting labour rights. However, given that the just transition landscape is still evolving, corporations and financial institutions face several bottlenecks. Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA)'s paper on "Advancing Credible and Robust Just Transition Plans" was recently admitted as an official input paper for the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group for G20 Brasil 2024. In the paper, we highlight several ways in which the #G20 can play a role in helping overcome the hurdles that prevent a wider adoption of robust just transition plans. Just Transition planning is pivotal for all relevant stakeholders including corporations and financial institutions. As the #justtransition landscape is currently evolving there are many challenges in implementing credible plans. G20 can play an important role to help overcome some of these challenges. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)'s 2024 World Investment Report focusing on investment facilitation and digital government has been published! Here are the key takeaways: 🔹 Global FDI Trends -Global FDI in 2023 decreased by 2% to $1.3 trillion. -Excluding volatile European conduit economies, global FDI flows were over 10% lower than in 2022. 🔹 Investment Challenges & Opportunities -The international investment environment remains challenging due to economic fracturing, geopolitical tensions, and cautious MNE strategies. -Positive outlook: Increased greenfield project announcements in 2023 could drive modest FDI growth in 2024. 🔹 Sector-Specific Insights -Cross-border M&As fell by 46% in value; international project finance dropped by 26%. -Bright spot: Greenfield investment projects increased by 2%, especially in developing countries (+15%). 🔹 Regional Highlights -Africa: FDI declined by 3%, with notable green hydrogen projects announced. -Developing Asia: FDI fell by 8%, with declines in China and India, but South-East Asia remained stable. -Latin America & Caribbean: FDI decreased by 1%, but saw growth in renewable energy and critical minerals sectors. 🔹 Policy & Sustainable Finance Trends -72% of investment policy measures in 2023 were favorable to investors. -Sustainable finance market grew by 20% to over $7 trillion, but faces challenges like greenwashing. 🔹 Digital Government & Investment Facilitation -Digital facilitation tools for business and investment are improving FDI attraction and business formalization. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) observes two major trends: 1.a. Weak trade and weak investment - meaning for the the LDCs weak growth! - in the estimates of all IOs. 1.b. FDI was found weak for the 2nd straight year 2.a The funds directed towards the SDGs and the related sectors to the SDGs fell by 10% in 2023 - worrying trend 3. Since 2019 the geographical distribution of manufacturing projects mainly shifted closer to OECD markets - with new strategic locations for the TNCs. 3.b. Decentralization ito investment esp wrt manufacturing - towards Central America, Mexico, West Asia and North Africa - are the beneficiary region 4. Total Investment landscape - wrt Decline of FDI - decreased 2% in 2023! Stabilized around 1.3 Trillion USD - nothing major is happening - going down but not dramatically but remains stable... Developing nations saw a decline of 7% of FDI - meaning - which is more damaging than the 10% average decline. Decline in investment related to the SDGs sectors #UNCTAD thinks that there will be a most growth in 2024 - change of tendency - more optimistic - extra effort to ease the financial conditions and investment facilitation - this could support this optimism wrt 2024 The decrease in M&A for EU (14%) & North America (5%) The most vulnerable countries - The LDCs and LLDCs and SIDS saw a slight increase in FDIs When it comes to #SustainableFinance which is part of the worrying trends A marginal growth in sustainable bonds but inflows into sustainable investment flow dropped by 60% - not yielding the expected result - not as stable as it was thought to be See discussion about Green-Washing - because more and more investors are demanding more impact and better credible reporting This means that the investor is becoming more demanding and looking more credible on everything called sustainable/ESG investing. External auditing and 3rd parting rating will be important to maintain the entusiasm towards sustainable finance. Negative spill-overs on the SMEs due to the Sustainability Standards with the SMEs shouldn't be overburdened by many standards (spaghettibowl of standards) - need a system that is credible and that allow SMEs to participate in GVC - but need a more straightward and less complex system!s Investor registration expanded to 124 in 2023/24 - acc. ito investment facilitation - to support the weakest countries with the weakest institutions. Digital government for investment facilitation - benefiting all businesses (domestic/foreign) is an important tool that could strengthen - to counteract wrt weak FDI towards DCs and SDGs investment. World Investment Report 2024 UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Global foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 2% to $1.3 trillion in 2023 amid an economic slowdown and rising geopolitical tensions. The report highlights that the decline exceeds 10% when excluding the large swings in investment flows in a few European economies. The downturn in project finance affected sustainable development, with new funding for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sectors dropping over 10%, particularly in agrifood and water. This hampers efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda and calls for urgent policy action to revamp sustainable development finance. The report emphasizes that business facilitation and digital government solutions can address low investment by creating a transparent and streamlined environment. It highlights significant growth in online services and information portals, saying such tools also support broader digital government development, benefiting developing nations in particular. We're working with our partners to find solutions and new ways to finance sustainable development around the world to ensure's we leave no-one behind and deliver health for all. World Health Service is offering a way to invest in creating a sustainable model of healthcare and deliver health for all, leaving no-one behind. The investment will help to build out the #WHIS model which is based on combining human, social, and structural capital by creating a knowledge transfer platform that exists to support the health economies around the world. Outcome: The model will empower communities and individuals to manage their own health and wellbeing. Investors have the opportunity to create new and meaningful jobs while pursuing the UN sustainable development goals. Investments will be made to strengthen health systems and reduce demand on Health and Social care using proven, evidence-based research. All investments would be collaborated on with trusted partners to establish a new model of healthcare focused on preventing disease to facilitate healthier communities and within a sustainable economic system.
