UNDP’s Insurance and Risk Finance Facility is building the financial resilience of countries, households, businesses, nature and food systems. Here are highlights of its recent work in Colombia. 💠 Solutions for small businesses Winners of an Insurance Innovation Challenge to improve access to financing and insurance for shopkeepers were announced in October. First place was awarded to the team comprised of the Colmena Seguros, Entre Amigos and Bemovil organizations, who proposed a revolving credit of up to five million Colombian pesos, including embedded insurance to protect against damage and theft. In total, 17 teams participated. The event was made possible through a collaboration with PNUD Colombia, UNDP Accelerator Labs, Fasecolda - Federación de Aseguradores Colombianos and Banca de las Oportunidades. Learn more via the video below or read this press release: https://lnkd.in/e6TyUCFc 💠 National financial inclusion Workshops in November and December gathered perspectives from over 70 representatives from small and micro businesses, insurance companies and others on how to strengthen the “Insurance Demand Survey”. The survey will officially launch this year, targeting over 6,000 respondents. The data will be used to understand current and potential insurance consumers and support the generation of new products. 💠 Regulation of distribution channels In December, workshops focused on regulatory adjustments for insurance distribution channels were held with the national insurance regulatory and supervisory units for insurance companies, brokers, intermediaries and InsurTechs organizations. Attendees evaluated local regulations and explored new trends in insurance distribution. Their contributions will be applied to new incentives and regulatory adjustments. 💠 Actuarial capacity Over 60 actuarial students and graduate actuaries attended a regional workshop at the start of December that provided them with invaluable strategies and tips for success in actuarial certification exams. This workshop was held as part of the Global Actuarial Initiative (GAIN) by UNDP and Milliman. 💠 Nature resilience The Facility was at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity #COP16Colombia, advancing the critical role of insurance in enabling nature-based solutions. For instance, the winners of an Insurance Innovation Challenge to protect investments in biodiversity were announced and showcased. This was in collaboration with BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative, Fasecolda and UNDP Colombia. Making finance work for people and the planet - to achieve the SDGs.
About us
Financing the SDGs requires a fundamental transformation of the global financial system. International financial models need to be re-adjusted to work for the benefit of people and the planet. Total global wealth estimated at US$463.6 trillion, but few of these resources are being channeled towards sustainable development. Investment in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is not happening at the scale and speed necessary to achieve them by 2030. UNDP is working to bring together public and private finance, in order to generate catalytic impact on the SDGs. Its ambitious US$1 trillion ‘moonshot’ target calls for public and private partners to join UNDP in marshalling the funds needed to secure a sustainable future for all people and the planet, while continuing to generate returns and fuel the growth of emerging economies. This transformative effort is led by UNDP's Sustainable Finance Hub.

🔈Read the new report on “Developing Takaful Market Systems” to learn how the Takaful market can bolster the #financialresilience of Muslim-majority populations and non-Muslims seeking alternative financing modalities. We live in a world of rising risks (such as climate change, health crises, and conflict) and an immense financial protection gap. Of the one billion people living in the top five countries with Muslim-majority populations, less than two percent have any form of financial protection. The Takaful system is based on the principles of shared responsibility, joint indemnity and mutual protection. Participants contribute to a common fund to cover each other’s losses in a model that promotes a community-based approach to risk management, emphasizing fairness, transparency and collective well-being. 📚 The UNDP Insurance and Risk Finance Facility, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) joint report “Building Climate Resilience Through Takaful, Part Two: Developing Takaful Market Systems” delves into: 🔸The Takaful market system today 🔸 Developing supporting functions for the Takaful sector 🔸Building the enabling environment for Takaful 🔸Recommendations for governments, Takaful operators, industry associations, community organizations, international organizations and academic institutions. ➡️ Open and download the report below to discover more.
