November is National Family Caregivers Month. We are caregivers, loved ones, and patients on a mission to develop therapies that make a difference. This month we also had the honor of attending the Congenital Hyperinsulinism International Family Conference in Liverpool and are grateful to have a community of patients, families, physicians, and researchers working to improve the lives of those living with HI. The role of caregiver can be filled with challenges and complexities, but also comes with many rewards and a profound impact on families and communities. Thank you to all caregivers for your hard work and commitment! #Caregiver #ResourcesForCaregivers #FamilyCaregiversMonth

While our patients are the reason we exist, we also extend our compassion to our patients’ caregivers. We note the challenges facing our patients in their charts but taking note of what a caregiver may be experiencing requires extra effort at times. This scene is a good reminder of how deceiving looks can be. People who are suffering may “look” okay but they are not okay. A simple gesture of asking a caregiver if they need anything or perhaps saying thank you for their support of the patient can uplift the person who feels like the weight of the patient’s world is on their shoulders. If nothing else, in a very literal sense, caregivers are partners with us in patient care. We need them to help us and they need us in kind. As we approach a new calendar year, I personally plan to ensure that my health equity efforts are inclusive of the needs of caregivers. Caregivers deserve our compassion and support. We all do our part to demonstrate that. #caregivers #partnersincare #compassion

Tomorrow, April 2 is National Caregiver Day In the 2011 Speech from the Throne, Governor General David Johnston read, “Our Government’s plan also recognizes the tremendous time and resources required of family caregivers.” In their Canadian Caregiver Strategy, the Canadian Caregivers Coalition proposed 5 Key Elements of the Strategy for the development of legislation, policy, and programs that support the vital caregiver role. 1 Safeguard the health and well-being of family caregivers. 2 Minimize the financial burden placed on family caregivers. 3 Enable access to user-friendly information and education. 4 Create flexible workplace / educational environments that respect caregiving obligations. 5 Invest in research on family caregiving as a foundation for evidence-informed decision-making. https://lnkd.in/gC2jfizF
