While our patients are the reason we exist, we also extend our compassion to our patients’ caregivers. We note the challenges facing our patients in their charts but taking note of what a caregiver may be experiencing requires extra effort at times. This scene is a good reminder of how deceiving looks can be. People who are suffering may “look” okay but they are not okay. A simple gesture of asking a caregiver if they need anything or perhaps saying thank you for their support of the patient can uplift the person who feels like the weight of the patient’s world is on their shoulders. If nothing else, in a very literal sense, caregivers are partners with us in patient care. We need them to help us and they need us in kind. As we approach a new calendar year, I personally plan to ensure that my health equity efforts are inclusive of the needs of caregivers. Caregivers deserve our compassion and support.
