Rethinking Inclusivity: When "Open to All" Isn't Enough We often hear about diversity and inclusion initiatives, but how many truly go beyond surface-level efforts? Let's explore some eye-opening strategies that are redefining what it means to be inclusive: Menstrual Equity: A tech bootcamp in rural India provided free sanitary products, resulting in a 40% increase in female participation. Who knew pads could code? Childcare Revolution: An urban planning conference offered on-site daycare, boosting single-parent attendance by 65%. Cities designed by diverse voices - now that's smart growth! Time Zone Tango: A global virtual hackathon rotated event times, ensuring participants from all continents could join prime hours. Innovation knows no time zones! Language Liberation: A startup incubator provided real-time translation services, leading to a 30% rise in immigrant-founded ventures. Accent on success, anyone? Neurodiversity Nudge: A government think tank implemented quiet rooms and sensory-friendly spaces, increasing neurodiverse hiring by 25%. Different minds, better policies. These examples challenge us to think: What invisible barriers might we be overlooking in our own initiatives? True inclusivity often means addressing the unseen and unspoken. It's not just about opening doors, but ensuring everyone has an equal chance to walk through them. What creative strategies have you seen or implemented to make spaces truly accessible to all? Let's brainstorm in the comments! #RethinkingInclusion #CreativeAccessibility #DiversityInAction

Being a good innovation is not enough. Many good innovation don't go through the appropriate route before they are introduced to communities. As a Field Extension Agent, I have learned that many researchers make less of this process. They go through "most valuable entities", resulting to very low adoption of the innovation. To Ensure Acceptance and Integration, researchers must: ✨Clearly communicate the practical benefits of the innovation. ✨Include diverse stakeholders such as community heads, women leaders, local researchers, members of the community in the planning process. ✨Avoid showing favouritism to any group. ✨Collaborate with community members to implement the innovation. ✨Respect the social structures and power dynamics of the community. PS: Do you agree? #innovation #extensionagent

In many developing regions, the road to digital inclusion is still blocked by three major challenges: 1. High costs of devices and data 2. Low digital literacy 3. Perceived lack of relevance of online services in daily life These barriers not only prevent individuals from accessing critical products and services but also limit companies’ ability to reach their intended audiences. But there is a solution. One that’s not only bringing people online but also fast-tracking digital inclusion—leading to tangible improvements in work, health, education, and finance. I’m thrilled to share that our recent Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research has made significant strides in the field of HCI for Development (HCI4D) with two new CHI24 papers. Although I missed presenting at #chi2024 in Hawaii this year, I am incredibly proud of the collaborative effort and impactful insights we’ve gathered. Here’s a glimpse into our work, and read the full paper to learn more: 1) Hearing Community Voices in HCI4D: Establishing Safe Places to Co-Create Counter-Collective Narratives with Women Farmers in Bangladesh: As the first author of this paper, we explored innovative research design methods with remote, disadvantaged women farmers in Bangladesh. By creating psychological safety and agency, we co-created a counter-collective storytelling approach that amplifies their voices. We utilized community-led radio-style audio recording to document women's challenges and priorities. The Benefits of Community Voice framework helped us analyze rich insights from community contexts, lived experiences, and local knowledge. This work emphasizes the importance of community participation in HCI4D to empower marginalized voices and democratize development efforts. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/g_Rky_P2 2) Recordkeeping in Voice-based Remote Community Engagement: As a co-author of this paper, we examined voice-based remote community engagement tools, such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), which are becoming increasingly vital for marginalized communities. Our qualitative analysis of stakeholder focus group discussions with domestic workers and NGOs revealed critical insights for developing inclusive recordkeeping approaches. These recommendations aim to enhance distributed community engagement and empowerment through effective recordkeeping tailored to voice-based remote community engagement. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gvA-E7yH I’m eager to connect with fellow researchers, practitioners, and potential collaborators who are passionate about leveraging technology for social good. Let’s explore how we can further empower communities and drive impactful change together! #HCI4D #CommunityEngagement #DigitalInclusion #ResearchImpact #UXResearch #SocialGood #AcademicResearch #TechForGood #chi2024 #CommunityEmpowerment #HumanComputerInteraction #MonashInfoTech #MonashUniversity
