I’m thrilled to share that our recent Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research has made significant strides in the field of HCI for Development (HCI4D) with two new CHI24 papers. Although I missed presenting at #chi2024 in Hawaii this year, I am incredibly proud of the collaborative effort and impactful insights we’ve gathered. Here’s a glimpse into our work, and read the full paper to learn more: 1) Hearing Community Voices in HCI4D: Establishing Safe Places to Co-Create Counter-Collective Narratives with Women Farmers in Bangladesh: As the first author of this paper, we explored innovative research design methods with remote, disadvantaged women farmers in Bangladesh. By creating psychological safety and agency, we co-created a counter-collective storytelling approach that amplifies their voices. We utilized community-led radio-style audio recording to document women's challenges and priorities. The Benefits of Community Voice framework helped us analyze rich insights from community contexts, lived experiences, and local knowledge. This work emphasizes the importance of community participation in HCI4D to empower marginalized voices and democratize development efforts. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/g_Rky_P2 2) Recordkeeping in Voice-based Remote Community Engagement: As a co-author of this paper, we examined voice-based remote community engagement tools, such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), which are becoming increasingly vital for marginalized communities. Our qualitative analysis of stakeholder focus group discussions with domestic workers and NGOs revealed critical insights for developing inclusive recordkeeping approaches. These recommendations aim to enhance distributed community engagement and empowerment through effective recordkeeping tailored to voice-based remote community engagement. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gvA-E7yH I’m eager to connect with fellow researchers, practitioners, and potential collaborators who are passionate about leveraging technology for social good. Let’s explore how we can further empower communities and drive impactful change together! #HCI4D #CommunityEngagement #DigitalInclusion #ResearchImpact #UXResearch #SocialGood #AcademicResearch #TechForGood #chi2024 #CommunityEmpowerment #HumanComputerInteraction #MonashInfoTech #MonashUniversity

[#DigitalInequality] Is it outdated to talk about #DigitalDivides in developed countries like Spain? 🤔 In fact, it is always important to highlight that the #digitalization of society is not as simple, straightforward and efficient as it is claimed to be, wherever the phenomenon takes place. But diving into cultural specificities is also necessary! 🔎 This study on digital #inequality and old age in Catalonia, Spain, highlights how older citizens are still among those who don't or can't benefit from access to and use of #ICT. Find out more in this report commissioned by the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Science and Technology (CAPCIT), along with 12 recommendations to address this persistent digital divide. ☑ in Catalan and Spanish : https://lnkd.in/dh6wS3VD ☑in English : https://lnkd.in/eP9CXGme It is also an occasion to acknowledge the work done in this direction by scholars from IN3 at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya 👏👏👏 Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol Sara Suárez Gonzalo Isabel Sáenz Hernández

Today we published an Innovation & Research Caucus report looking at the profile of Innovate UK applicants and beneficiaries from small and micro businesses between 2016/17 to 2022/23. It represents a key step in really understanding who are the innovators applying for and accessing funding from the UK innovation agency. From a total of 48,024 eligible applications, of which 33,209 funding applications were matched to identify personal characteristics (i.e. gender, ethnicity and education), we have analysed 24,956 unique applicants. The findings highlight that there are statistical differences in the success rates of different applicant groups according to ethnicity and educational background but not by gender. The research also applies an intersectional lens to understand more about who are the applicants and beneficiaries. Read the report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJy4jaJS

As we continue to strive to empower, train and advocate around digital skilling and digital agency for women and girls in the global south, we must relate the cause to the realities of the last mile communities. Where the immediate agency and needs are rooted in access and adaptability of the digital devices and resources. In our push for digital agility, we must continually be alive to the reality of widening the digital divide and leaving very many communities behind. Therefore, at the heart of the work that we do, we must as of priority remember that digital platforms must not become a tool to disenfranchise last-mile communities but rather should be a catalyst to going into these communities and providing solutions that work for them.

Each year on 12 August, International Youth Day highlights global youth issues and celebrates their societal role. This year’s theme is ‘From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.’ The digital age offers opportunities to boost sustainable development and fight inequalities. Technologies like mobile devices and AI can advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Young people lead in digital innovation, but significant disparities remain. Youth in low-income countries and young women face major barriers to internet access and digital skills, worsening inequalities. Digital inclusion is crucial for fairness. While seen as digital natives, youth face significant challenges. Equitable access to technology is essential for achieving the SDGs. With 2030 approaching, supporting youth in digital innovation is vital to address global challenges. As companies and institutions, what conversations are you having with your new wave of employees to integrate more youth-driven initiatives into your business models so we are building systems for a world where young people want to live? As individuals, are you listening to the young people in your life about their concepts of equity and how they see technology serving as a means to create more of it? #youth #culturl #InternationalYouthDay #sustainability #worldyouthforum #digitalage #digitalinnovation

😀 I am very happy to share the newly released #IDOSblog article, which I collaborated on with co-author Tuhinsubhra Giri, Ph.D. Thank you 👏 , Sven Grimm, Axel Berger, and German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)for providing us with the great opportunity to delv into the discussion on #Youth and #Techonology under the 2024 Hamburg Sustainability Conference. The article expounded on the role of technology as a catalyst in driving youth engagement in global development—both a boon and a bane. While it has undeniably empowered youth by providing avenues for activism, economic participation, and education, the pervasive digital divide, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and unsustainable digital consumption highlight the pressing need for balanced, inclusive, and responsible policies. Bridging these gaps and ensuring meaningful youth involvement in policy-making processes, especially regarding technological development, will be pivotal in transforming technology into a truly empowering force for global sustainable development. For more details, please check out the full article via this link 😄 : https://lnkd.in/esUJWFJH #ShapingFuturesNetwork #MGGNetwork #MGGAcademy #Sustainability #Digitalization #Youth #Technology
