🎉 A small Victorian town, a creative approach, and a life-changing opportunity! I have observed a trend similar to those reported at the University of Sydney, where students are choosing on-campus living for its vibrant community and social experiences, even when they live nearby. This surge in interest in residential college life is encouraging, since it shows that parents understand the enduring value of immersive campus experiences. However, at King's College, UQ, we're acutely aware of our responsibility to maintain accessibility for students from all backgrounds, even those from regional areas. We recognise the value that local students bring to our community. Their presence enriches the college experience for all, creating welcoming experiences between urban and regional students. However, our quota system also caps the number of local admissions, ensuring that King's College continues to serve its vital function as a bridge between regional Australia and higher education. #education #highered #culture

Only 29% of students from rural areas are enrolled in college vs. 42% of students in metro areas* One of the big challenges for students in rural areas and small towns is that many college access organizations serve larger cities and urban communities. Luckily, there are a handful of college access organizations that offer free, virtual support to students including: Matriculate UPchieve Get Schooled Let's Get Ready These organizations provide access to resources and support for all students (regardless of geographic location). Roughly 1 in 4 students on Scholarships360 is from a rural location or small town and we're excited to help spread the word about opportunities that help advance rural college access! If you know of other organizations that are focused on rural students or offer free, virtual college access advising, please drop them in the comments! *Source: U.S. Department of Education

Rural students often face unique challenges when it comes to college access, from limited local resources to fewer college prep programs reaching their communities. This disparity highlights how critical it is to extend support to rural areas, where students are just as talented and driven but may lack the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. It’s encouraging to see organizations like Matriculate, UPchieve, Get Schooled, and Let's Get Ready bridging this gap! The need for more targeted efforts is immense. Investing in rural students isn’t just about addressing educational inequalities—it’s about ensuring that every student, regardless of where they live, has the resources and guidance to achieve their goals. Expanding these efforts could make a significant difference in leveling the playing field for rural youth. Does anyone know of other organizations that specifically focus on rural student success?

As someone who grew up in a rural farming community in North Dakota, this one hits me hard. "Rural Americans already have far less access to higher education than their counterparts in cities and suburbs. Now the comparatively few universities that serve rural students are eliminating large numbers of programs and majors, blaming plummeting enrollment and financial crises. Many rural private, nonprofit colleges are closing altogether." This is why innovative solutions (e.g., Rize Education) and online universities (Western Governors University, Southern New Hampshire University, Capella University, University of Maryland Global Campus) are so, so important. https://lnkd.in/eH2aBfZR
