Last Thursday, the HRACO Human Resources Association of Central Ohio Workforce Readiness Committee collaborated with the Columbus Metropolitan Library for their annual Job & Resource Fair. Members of the Workforce Readiness Committee offered free headshots and conducted breakout sessions focused on resume writing and interview preparation. These sessions were filled with attendees eager to gain insights into navigating the application process and crafting effective resumes. Job seekers often face challenges with these two essential components of their job search. Why is this the case? 💻 Technology Changes: The rise of applicant tracking systems (ATS) and the use of AI has transformed how resumes are evaluated. Many applicants are unsure how to format their resumes to get past these systems, which can lead to frustration when their applications are overlooked. 🤸♀️ Complex Application Processes: Employers sometimes have intricate and lengthy application processes. Multiple steps, including assessments and various forms, can deter applicants from completing their applications. Job seekers may feel overwhelmed or discouraged from applying altogether. 🗣 Articulating Value: Applicants may struggle to convey their unique value proposition and how their skills and experiences align with the employer's needs. I encourage employers to show a bit of understanding towards job seekers. With over 1,000 individuals attending this event, there is certainly a wealth of talent ready to enter the workforce! Indeed, simplicity often holds the key to achievement. Complexity can sometimes lead to confusion or unnecessary hurdles. Here are a few thoughts on this: Clarity: Simple actions are easier to understand and execute. When the path is clear, progress becomes smoother. Focus: Complexity can scatter our attention. Simplicity allows us to concentrate on what truly matters. Consistency: Small, consistent steps add up over time. Simplicity encourages steady progress. Remember, sometimes the most profound solutions are elegantly simple. Like Robynn Storey said.
Pay your interns. When recruiting, look for candidates with the “Open to Work” banner. Offer fair wages. Hire after 2 interviews. Let candidates know they didn’t get the job. Train, support and coach struggling employees instead of firing them. Let people work from home if possible. Show your “flex” in kindness, not “control.” Give annual raises. Create a workplace that celebrates fun and camaraderie, not misery. Fire bullies. Bonus leadership on employee satisfaction, not revenue. Sound too simple? It’s not. These are the pillars of good stewardship. Retaining talented staff isn’t hard. Most success comes from simple actions and philosophies. 📅Co-op job seekers for the summer 2025 work term, the Co-op Job Board opens January 1 and the first possible deadline to apply to jobs is January 13 at midnight! If you’re looking for a job, take advantage of this deadline to get lots of applications in before you get busy with your course load. After January 14, co-op jobs with individualized deadlines roll in on a daily basis so it's important to continue to check the Co-op Job Board regularly and send in applications. ✅Want to make sure you’re submitting the strongest application possible? Attend a Co-op Job Application Working Session! These sessions are an opportunity for you to pop in and speak to staff who can answer questions about tailoring your resume and cover letter for your applications, applying and searching for jobs on mySuccess, setting up job alerts and search filters, and more. Working Sessions are offered 1:30-3:30pm on January 7, 8, 9, 10, and 13.
