“My new senior product talent slows us down. We are nimble; we can’t afford this for too long.” I had lunch with a good friend, a startup founder, who shared the common challenge of onboarding a new senior product designer or manager. The issue is not leadership or technical performance; the hurdle often lies in understanding the essence of customer pains and the product's unique value proposition. It forces leaders to revisit the whys of the decision instead of moving forward. This harms outcome delivery and team focus. This is one of the most significant risks when hiring a new senior product talent. A big bet needs to deliver value. My go-to approach to accelerating product understanding is to bring them on support, CSM, or even sales calls at least one full day a week for at least one month. Not for shadowing but for doing the actual work. This hands-on experience, more than process reviews or document reading, builds deep empathy and insights, leading to faster and more effective integration. From my experience, this approach improves the onboarding experience and accelerates their business impact. Try it. I will pay it off.

It’s always interesting to me to see the same companies hiring for Product Manager roles on a regular cadence. You might think, “Sheesh! That company is growing!” You might be right, but you may be missing YUGE 🚩🚩. It’s just as likely that you’re looking at a company with high Product turnover and that’s usually a sign that the experience there is going to be sub optimal. It’s either a place with broken processes and a refusal to fix them, or it’s a place driven by executive “gut feelings” instead of data and customer interactions. Danger Will Robinson, DANGER! Worse, it could be a feature/function factory where they bring together teams and “part time” Product people under the guise of a full time position to test the market. So, be careful not to turn regular role postings into high expectations. Do your homework.

Need. A. Product Manager. Looking for a "tech guy who can also lead our product" and has a holistic understanding of delivering value to consumers. While I was looking for a tech guy for 0to16, one thing that I realised was that a lot of people know tech and code and related work. But we actually need a PRODUCT GUY who comes from Tech (Full Stack). Someone who understands what we are trying to deliver, what value it creates, what our priorities should be, and how can we build it. So if you are someone who has had some experience in tech along with building products that deliver value, someone who can think from a user point of view, someone who can think from first principles, then let's get on a call and see where we can take it.
