"Do you speak Nigerian?" she asked. Well, no, because there is no language called Nigerian. Working with international clients involves a bit of homework—getting to know them and understanding them hepls you communicate and most importantly connect. It isn't always easy to find out where they are from, but when you do, it is a good idea to prepare. It helps to avoid questions like, "Do you speak Nigerian?" To clarify, many countries, especially in Africa, have LOADS of languages that have nothing to do with the countries name. You would not ask someone if they speak "Indian," "Filipino," or "Belgium," right? Now, let’s talk about Nigeria. Nigeria is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 500 spoken languages and more than 250 ethnic groups, each with multiple tribes. This makes Nigeria, like many African countries, incredibly rich in culture. The three major tribes are Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. I am Yoruba, and I speak Yoruba. I also understand one Yoruba dialect called Ijesha—just enough to get by, so please do not ask me to speak it! I once landed a ghanian client because I spoke a bit of Ewé and know and love ewe dishes from Ghana, thanks to being born in Togo and living there until my early teens. Yes, Togo is another country but ewe is also spoken in Togo and Ghana neighbours Togo I had loads of ghanian friend and Voila. (How many times did i say Togo in that paragraph?) At the end of the day, people connect with people. We all want to feel seen, and sometimes, knowing just a little about someone else’s background can make all the difference.
