Levi’s “The greatest story ever worn” campaign celebrates 150 years of the iconic 501 jeans - but does it resonate? There’s always an interesting tension for Levi’s between the everyday nature of Levi’s jeans (ubiquity) and the need to create desire (scarcity) with premium pricing. Not to mention that we already all have at least ten pairs of jeans at home and we really don’t need another one if only for the sake of the planet. As you would expect from Levi’s the production values in the campaign are excellent - memorable music, great casting, wry humour and dripping with cool. The Kingston Jamaica 1970 spot has something that the other two though. ”When the 501 made it to Kingston. Kingston made it their own" showcases how ubiquitous fashion can be cool and personalised. Of course the Toots & the Maytals music helps, but it’s more than that. Levi’s will probably never again recreate the power of their BBH 1985 “Launderette” ad (a candidate for greatest ad of all time in our view), but “Kingston” makes the product desirable, which is ultimately the objective for all brand communication. The same cannot be said for “Fair exchange” or “Legends never Die” - well produced pieces, but they just don’t make you want to wear those jeans. Our verdict - go back to Kingston Levi’s! Earlier this week, Miu Miu reported stellar growth for the first quarter of 2024, with revenues up 89% year-on-year — its biggest hike yet. The brand now makes up over a quarter of Prada Group’s revenues. In 2023, Miu Miu’s revenues were up 58% year-on-year (and its fourth-quarter revenues soared 82%). And in 2022, revenues were up 20%. So the clothes are good — but there’s more to it. Mrs Prada has emphasized Miu Miu’s focus on “youthful energy” in recent years — a rejection of the brand’s former ties to expressly young women. The brand’s AW24 casting hammered this home. Miu Miu’s styling makes people want to buy into the fantasy — even via a single item. The styling and cohesion facilitate the storytelling. They’ve brought together icons from every corner of British culture—actors, musicians, footballers—and delivered one clear message, #burberry is still here, still British, and still the gold standard for protection against the elements. What's genius here is that Burberry’s not just selling outerwear—they’re positioning themselves at the heart of British culture. Whether it's Olivia Colman representing British film or footballers like Eberechi Eze for sport, the brand is sending a message: Being British isn’t one thing, it’s many things, all wrapped up in a trench coat.
