It's Spring Equinox! Today the light and the dark of the day are equal, and in the northern hemisphere, this time is often a time when people plant new seeds to harvest later. Spring has always been my favorite time of year. In Texas where I grew up, it's wildflower season, and the roadsides are covered with dots of vibrant color that look like something George Seurat would paint. It's Rodeo season and you can go see animals be born into the world. Birds are emerging from nests as they break through their eggs. The world feels like it is teeming with life after the quiet of winter. As we enter this spring, I'm thinking about what I want to plant to bring to the world. I'm hoping I can continue to find people who want to transform their workplaces. I believe we can change how people work together. I believe its possible to create workplaces where everyone can thrive. I believe we can unlearn ways of managing and leading that are dominating and controlling. I believe we can learn to lead and manage in liberatory ways. I know breaking with traditional ways of working isn't for every organization but I hope the people who do want to do this work can find each other. So this spring, I'll keep planting those seeds and work to find my people. I can't wait to see what we might grow and harvest together. What are you planting? #SpringEquinox #LiberatoryWorkplaces

Great to see this from Helen Wadham, Carlos Monterrubio and Kate Dashper on the drive to recognise interspecies work, and specifically horses as workers which their work is contributing to hugely. Colleagues Fiona Carmichael, Sheona Goodyear, Emerald Henderson and I are exploring horses and humans as workers in sport, leisure and equine assisted services, with a particular interest in horses working for human wellbeing outcomes. We were impacted both by the events with the Household Cavalry horses and by responses in the public domain which reflected different ways in which horses are understood in relationship to us as humans. Here’s to ongoing development and dissemination of research on interspecies work as a domain which is vital for considering welfare and wellbeing for human and non-human animals - and the specifics of reducing exploitation and increasing the possibility of mutuality as co-workers (such as through species appropriate working conditions).
Just published! Our new article in The Conversation reflects on an incident much reported in the British press & social media last week, when a group of horses from the Household Cavalry galloped through central London. The article draws on recent research with Kate Dashper & Carlos Monterrubio & highlights how working horses are still very much part of the workforce in the UK & elsewhere. This brings opportunities & challenges for people & horses alike. In particular, the episode reminds us that the way we think about & treat working animals should be part of broader discussions about sustainability. #interspecies #manmetses

"Jay is always willing to help wherever needed. He hauls cement/ash in Northeast Iowa, Wisconsin, and Cedar Rapids; as well as oversize/overweight equipment. Jay is a pleasure to work with and a great asset to Croell, Inc." Nominated by: Julie Bloom, East Trucking Manager Favorite thing about working at Croell: A lot of different people from employees to people at the terminals Most interesting project: First job I did at Croell was hauling equipment back from Longmont, CO with Bob Dreckman and John Bush. Didn't know either of them so I was nervous, but it went well and we became friends. What advice would you give to someone who might want to join Croell: Don't get overwhelmed. You won't learn everything in 1 or 2 weeks. But it gets easier as time goes on. Hobbies include: We spend almost every weekend on the river boating, water skiing, and wake boarding with friends and family. One thing people probably don’t know about me: I had a stroke in 2004. Spent 10 days in the hospital, was using a walker and then a cane. Recovered nicely though! Bucket list: Would love to get a pilot's license and fly my own plane. #CroellInc #EmployeeSpotlight #EmployeeRecognition

Becoming a Founder: Work-Life Balance I always hated the phrase "work-life balance." It’s one of those corporate expressions that should be thrown in the bin alongside "double hatting" and "acting-up". (Praise for the Gen-Z's who are seemily rallying against these). I understand the good intention behind it. We do need to find balance in life, to make time for ourselves, families, and friends, all while climbing the corporate ladder. But its prevalence (at least through my career) highlights a glaring contradiction between words and action. We’re told to seek balance, but the demands of work often lead to burnout and unnecessary stress. Through one part of my career, I slept in the office regularly for several months. My workload was enormous, I did little else but work. I still remember crying after my mid year review, I felt helpless and unable to cope with the demands. I was told that I needed more stretch but also to manage my work-life balance (WTF!). I actually kept a pillow in my locker for my 2am naps. The impact on my mental health and my relationships was staggering. But I got a promotion, so I felt like I was winning. I wasn't. Move forwards almost a decade. In this photo, I am tired. I had barely slept because my newborn son has decided to become nocturnal. And honestly, my energy was running low. But also in this photo, I am beaming with happiness. Clare Mroz and Abbie Carter were being their usual hilarious selves, trying to make me feel like I was posing for the front cover of Tatler. I had spent the afternoon immersed in creative design and strategy with Rupert Pearce and Jaime Blakeley-Glover as we prepared for the launch of an exciting new collaboration. And my Wife had just arrived to walk with me to pick up my son from nursery. In that moment, despite the fatigue, I was in a place that made me truly happy. So, I don't think it is finding "balance" that makes us (me) happy. I think it is about the feeling of autonomy and control. There will always be moments of exhaustion and chaos, especially as a founder. But what I am learning is that it’s about finding ultimate fulfillment in the mix. It’s not about perfectly separating "work" and "life" but about making sure the things I work on and the people I spend time with add meaning to both. That’s where I find my happy place. (p.s. For anyone who has ever worked for me. If I have ever told you to find work-life balance, I am sorry. It was lazy management and a sign that I was not prepared) (p.p.s - Patch is a bloody brilliant workspace filled with lovely people) #founder #worklifebalance #startupjourney #parenthood #entrepreneurship #findingfulfillment
Meet Lewis Howard - Co-CEO of BRAE, a strategy and innovation consultancy dedicated to sustainability. Lewis lives in Twickenham with his wife, two sons, and their dog, Islay. When he's not at Patch, there’s a good chance you'll find him out running or exploring the local parks with him family! 🌲🍃 Get to know Lewis a little more👇✨ ⭐️ What motivates you? The early years of running BRAE have been all about finding love in what we do and exploring whatever interests us. It has been wonderful to shed the restrictions and constraints of my old corporate life. 🏡 What does ‘Work Near Home’ mean to you? Working from Patch has completely transformed my relationship with the office. My commute is a short walk, I can drop my son off at nursery, walk the dog, and commute to work with no stress. My mornings are not a race against the clock anymore, they are now quality family time that I get to enjoy. ❤️ Why do you love where you live? I love Twickenham and the surrounding areas, we are so lucky to be on a beautiful stretch of the Thames surrounded by Royal Parks. In 20 minutes I can be in central London enjoying all that it has to offer, or I can be in the middle of a woodland in the countryside. #meetthemember #twickenhamcommunity #patchmembers
