🗞 Recently published this article in Energy Central with Kyle Thomas and Phil McKay introducing this concept of Grid Readiness Levels #GRL. It is our initial pass at articulating a much needed enhancement to how we think about and talk to the increasing need of bringing together cross-departmental collaboration within utilities and system operators to accelerate the adoption and implementation of new ideas, capabilities, processes, and technologies. A great initiative currently underway at the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) Electricity Hub, which focuses on bringing together utilities and system operators to tackle specifically renewable energy challenges from the transmission side. While this is particularly relevant to the integration of clean energy and inverter-based resources #IBR, it is relevant to so many facets of utility strategy planning. While a technology may be fully ready for adoption, that doesn't mean it's ready for widespread implementation across a utility or system. There are barriers (within the organization) that hold back its adoption. We as an industry work through those effectively; but we collectively are now forced to work through that process 100x faster than in the past. Thoughts and feedback welcome! BloombergNEF (BNEF)’s inaugural Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Cost Survey shows that while most long-duration energy storage technologies are still early-stage and costly compared to lithium-ion batteries, some have already or are set to achieve lower costs for longer durations. Ongoing advances in technology, and deployment experience, will further improve the feasibility and performance of these storage options for long-duration applications.
