Position Announcement: Executive Director, Uptown People's Law Center Uptown People’s Law Center (UPLC) is not your typical legal aid clinic. Its origins stretch back to the early 1970’s, as one of a group of survival programs supporting community organizing in Uptown. This included the fight by former coal miners and their widows to secure black lung benefits for disabled coal miners, as well as efforts to combat slumlords and displacement. Over the years, UPLC grew into a stand-alone, full-service legal clinic. It has refined and sharpened its legal practice to reflect the changing times and the evolving legal needs of the people of Uptown and throughout the state. Its lawyers and support staff have developed strong expertise in the areas of housing law, Social Security disability benefits, and prisoners’ civil rights. UPLC is seeking a dedicated and dynamic leader at this critical point in its 45-year history to use the power of the law to protect the rights of people holistically. The next Executive Director will serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson and will have the opportunity to build on this success and purpose through ongoing and deepening relationships with the community of lawyers, law schools, prisons, and the people of Uptown and beyond. Calling all NYS civil legal services workers! The Right to Counsel coalition is fighting for a statewide right to free representation for all tenants facing eviction in New York--and the campaign needs your help in the final weeks of the state budget process!Statewide Right to Counsel (RTC) legislation would drastically reduce evictions and keep New Yorkers housed. Over 176,000 tenants are currently facing eviction and over 100,000 New Yorkers and counting are experiencing homelessness. There's never been a more important moment to protect New Yorkers from displacement and pass Right to Counsel. The state legislature is fighting alongside tenants for RTC but we need to push them to support an enforceable right--to ensure that no tenant faces eviction without their basic due process upheld.

I know this is not a new idea. Combining law enforcement agencies has been done successfully, and some not so much. However, for some municipalities facing so many of the same issues, collaborating and partnering with your neighbor may be the answer. It is being done on a smaller scale with combined SWAT Teams and other specialized response teams. Law Enforcement is willing to put our toe in the water but diving in is a frightening option. My dissertation, a comparative case study, is focused on a particular geographic area of California, the Monterey Peninsula. I know it well from living and working there. I chose to go big with the recommendation of combining seven agencies as opposed to two. I believe this area is well suited for this action. I am throwing this possibility out to the LinkedIn community. Will it work? Could it work? I am interested in critical feedback. The pros and cons, the why’s and why nots. Just because it has not been done certainly does not mean it will not work. #LawEnforcement #MontereyPeninsula #Collaboration #Partnerships #JackMeek #UniversityofLaVerne #MarciaGodwin Thank you! https://drdmariewhite.com/ https://lnkd.in/gTzGPf4R

When hundreds of community legal services around Australia who give FREE help to thousands of people each month are in strife, once again it will be people in financial distress, in violent and controlling relationships and who are homeless, most affected. To add to this challenge, our sector is also struggling to retain trained, experienced and passionate staff— the lifeblood of this important work. We are calling for additional investment in legal assistance as part of a comprehensive response to meet the justice needs of people across the country (in line with the NLAP Review findings). This will require a much larger Commonwealth contribution to all legal assistance providers under the next NLAP including at least an additional $125 million a year for community legal centres. #CommunityLaw #FundEqualJustice Mark Dreyfus Jim Chalmers Katy Gallagher Mark Butler Amanda Rishworth Stephen Bates

Nine out of ten employers check criminal records when determining who to hire. Four out of five landlords use background checks when choosing tenants. Three in five colleges and universities consider criminal backgrounds when deciding who to admit. When you have a criminal record, the sentence does not end once time is served or fine paid; the stigma of having a criminal past follows well into the future. 𝗕𝘂𝘁, 𝗽𝗿𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁! In this blog post from Karen Robinson, https://lnkd.in/eKUQDngc, learn how you can help neighbors and community members access second chances through Volunteer Lawyers for Justice’s ReLeSe (Reentry Legal Services) Program. By volunteering with VLJ, you will serve clients who are experiencing poverty. The Legal Aid Society of San Diego is hiring Housing Staff Attorneys and Supervising Attorneys: https://lnkd.in/g9bRCjQe There are few things more central to a person's well-being than stable housing. Imagine being told that you have to move out of your home but you can't find any other places you can afford. Imagine trying to hold down a job, raise children, figure out how to safely recover from a necessary surgery, or pursue your education without a home to do it from. Imagine being told by one landlord after another that they won't rent to you because you have an eviction on your record. These are the struggles low-income tenants face daily. Now imagine being able to use your law degree to save someone from becoming homeless. Imagine having the privilege of being their safety net, and being able to help them not only stay housed, but obtain stability and actually thrive. That is what a career at LASSD is all about, and that is how I began my career here at LASSD...making a tangible difference in someone else's life, every single day.

Community Legal Centres Australia today released an important report on the state of the community legal sector. CLCA did an excellent job of surveying and collecting data from 117 centres across Australia. As more Australians are experiencing poverty and pressure from the cost of living, more funding is urgently needed to ensure Australians in need can receive legal advice and representation from community legal centres. 💡 Community legal centres turned away an estimated 350,000 clients in 2022-23 - that’s over 1,000 a day. They cannot meet this legal need because of lack of funding and staffing. On average, centres indicated they would need an extra 12 FTE staff to meet current demand. (CLCs have an average of 19 FTE staff.) 💡The top 3 challenges for community legal centres are: lack of funding, staff recruitment and increased client demand. 💡Community legal centres are experiencing a workforce crisis. Particularly in rural, regional and remote communities, community legal centres struggle to recruit and retain employees, when wages are not comparable to private and public sectors (including Legal Aid employees), and many cannot provide career progression pathways due to funding uncertainty. Community legal centres make an incredibly valuable contribution to the community, and deserve better than the current status quo. Read more here: https://clcs.org.au/sots/

In the US, "You Have A Right to an Attorney"... unless it's a civil issue. Meaning, as City Attorney David Chiu puts it: “If you shoplift a toothbrush, you have the right to an attorney,” but “If you’re about to lose your child in a custody fight, or you need a civil restraining order— you’re out of luck.” Open Door Legal is working to make access to FREE civil legal services a right for San Franciscans. Solving everyday problems with legal solutions. Over the last two and half years that I've worked for ODL, It's been amazing to see what access to legal services can do for our most vulnerable community members. In fact, our work has cut homelessness in half in the Bayview over the last decade (while homelessness increased by more than 50% across the rest of the city). There are so many laws that exist to protect us... but they're ultimately useless if we can't enforce them because of an overly complicated (and expensive!) legal system. Check out this article in the SF Examiner about our work and the radical way we're trying to change the way we see/access our legal system: https://lnkd.in/g8HvV57n
