Tip 2 for Disability Pride Month: Understand disability rights laws and inclusive policies. Compliance with accessibility laws like the ADA and Section 504 is just the beginning. What organizational policies and practices do you have in place to promote inclusion? Today is World Disability Day. Wherever I travel 🧳, I always make a point of looking around for certain things because they reflect how different cultures treat disabled people. - If there are disabled people around in public place. For any country, there is a certain % of disabled people, if you don't see them in public place. Ask the question where are they and why? - If there are disabled access ♿ for disabled people in public place, like station, airport or theatre 🎭. If there are not, ask the question why not? - On the television 📺 program, are there subtitles or sign language accompanying the sound. If there are not, why not? - What other questions do you have? and why? What is ableism? The belief that people with disabilities are inferior to those without disabilities – and that being nondisabled is the standard of "normal living". These beliefs have real world consequences: discrimination, social stigma, and marginalization. We all need to take step to challenge ableism in our communities, workplaces, and within ourselves, so that full inclusion becomes the norm – and not the exception. December 3rd of each year is recognized as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities #IDPD, highlighting the UN's Disability Inclusion Strategy. This strategy provides the foundation for sustainable and transformative progress on disability inclusion while reaffirming that the realization of human rights for all persons with disabilities is an integral part of all human rights and freedoms. Don’t be part of the 80% that’s doing nothing. Be the change agent who is doing something to ensure that your employees with disabilities are feeling valued and seen. Here’s a fact - if you have more than 5 employees/people on your team, the odds are you have at least one employee with a disability. Although they might not have felt safe enough to disclose it to you. Now is the time to start shifting your culture around disability inclusivity. It’s not too late! This… is true. There’s also been very little posts on social media across the board in this area. Is it due to the hesitation and anxiousness of what’s happening within our government and the presidential election that’s making companies not push onwards with their commitment for our disability communities? Is it the inflation that is impacting companies where their focus has shifted away from this to that? If so, something’s not right… there should be a balance as one would think. I cannot help but wonder what assessment tools Disability:IN is using to rate all the companies they have rated… Who’s doing these assessments? How are they authentically done with integrity? How are these companies getting high scores when this is the case… this post speaks volumes. Nonetheless, that should not slow us down, but drives us forward, and continue to speak out, speak up, push for changes that need to be made as there still so much to be done for our communities. What can we do to drive our companies to follow through with what they preach?
