Charity shop folks, you know what is very demure? Getting your charity shop…online. I’m still seeing plenty of charity shops jumping on this Gen-Z trend. But at the same time from a basket of 60+ charities who had accounts on online marketplaces in January this year, 5 have reduced the number of items listed and 3 have completely stopped selling online. The thing is 60% of people would love to buy more secondhand clothing from charities…online. And guess who makes the bulk of online circular fashion buyers? Who was born with a smart phone in their hands? Who is driving the sustainability-conscious growth of secondhand fashion on reselling platforms? How cutesy ! Gen-Z and younger Millennials live most of their economic lives online. Bringing people back in physical premises and having highly curated boutiques? Very mindful. But tapping into the success of so many online selling platforms and the supporters they bring, that’s very demure. Online marketplaces are reducing their fees. Time to let your charity fall love with online selling. #techforgood #charityfundraising #sustainablefashion #circularfashion

For a long time, brand was considered a dirty word in the charity sector. This was certainly the case when Dan Dufour joined homelessness charity Shelter as brand manager in 2004. “I was told on my first day of the job at Shelter that I couldn’t use the word ‘brand’ as it was toxic,” he says CR dives into why branding is now more vital than ever for charities

A charity who wants to get the best out of this Circularity boom has to master its online game. Here are the 3 main reasons charity shops are losing out on on the Secondhand, sustainability and circularity boom. 1-They are getting way more of lower quality clothes than before. Due to immense success of online selling platforms, people are keeping their best items to sell online and make more out of them. They are giving the lower quality ones to charities. 2-Many charities are still choosing to scale back or withdraw from selling online. Some charities have a clear high street traffic strategy in place for their shops. Many have dedicated boutiques where they sell the high quality donations and spread the rest of their donations across their other shops. And, unfortunately it doesn't quite meet their potential supporters need. I follow 3 Charity Boutiques on Instagram and almost every other item's picture they post to say they have them in the shop is met with a variation of these questions from followers. "Is this still available?" " Can I reserve this" "Can I order this online"? It confirms a research from SQLI that show for two years in a row that 60% of people who buy from charity wish they could buy from them online. 3-The cost of living crisis is siphoning donations away. Less disposable income equals less donations to charities. Especially younger generations are looking for ways to meet their needs with what they have. That includes not donating as much or as often. And selling what they have instead. One question I like to ask students when they say they buy and sell online, is : "Do you know at least one platform where you could buy from charities or buy to support charities?" and "Since you are selling online, would you be willing to donate a portion to charities?" To the first one they'd usually answer that no one platform comes to mind, And to the second, well, I'll let you guess their answer. ——— PS. I’m building Nucha App, a marketplace for charities, their supporters and circularity lovers. Know a charity that would like to diversify their fundraising diet, reach more supporters and sell to purpose led buyers? Send them my way.
