As we navigate the diverse and vibrant landscape of our city, we must confront an urgent call to action: it is time for San Francisco to do better for our veterans community, a remarkable population of over 26,000 brave individuals. These men and women, along with their families, have made profound sacrifices to protect our freedoms, dedicating themselves to the defense of the Constitution of the United States—an effort that demands our respect and continuous support, not just during election seasons but every single day. To truly honor their service, we must take deliberate and impactful steps to ensure that our veterans have the resources necessary to flourish in their post-military lives. We need to expand access to affordable housing, enhance mental healthcare services tailored to their unique experiences, and create robust employment initiatives that capitalize on their invaluable skills. These essential measures will empower our veterans to enjoy a fulfilling and prosperous life alongside every San Franciscan. Let’s not allow our gratitude to remain a seasonal sentiment; instead, let it evolve into an enduring commitment that strengthens our entire community. By investing in and supporting our military families, we cultivate an atmosphere of appreciation and inclusion, reinforcing the very values that define San Francisco. Together, let us forge a future in which every veteran and their family receive the dignity, support, and opportunities they have rightfully earned. By standing united in this mission, we will create a city where the sacrifices of our servicemen and women are acknowledged and celebrated not just in words, but in action—every single day of the year. - Commissioner Prince Jordan, San Francisco, Veteran Affairs Commission #USSSanFrancisco #VeteranSupport #SanFrancisco #BayArea #HonoringOurHeroes #ElectionSeason2024 #ArmedForces #MilitaryCommunity

In a city acclaimed for its diversity and innovation, it is both alarming and unacceptable that over 26,000 veterans who valiantly served our nation are neglected and overlooked. San Francisco’s residents must urgently advocate for this marginalized community. As we approach the mayoral election, the conspicuous absence of comprehensive initiatives supporting our veterans is troubling, with no candidates prioritizing this critical issue. Our city, a symbol of progressivism, must now convert ideals into concrete action for our military community. We must amplify our veterans’ voices in the halls of governance. Each candidate should be called to present detailed plans to address essential challenges: healthcare access, mental health support, housing stability, and job placement. San Francisco must embody the principle that no veteran should ever feel abandoned or underserved.

Breaking News: The Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act has officially passed Congress and is now heading to the President's desk for signature! TAPS is proud to have joined forces with our partners — the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), The American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) — to advocate for this landmark legislation, which will bring vital benefits to veterans, survivors, and their families. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Chairman Jon Tester, Ranking Member Jerry Moran, Chairman Mike Bost, and Ranking Member Mark Takano for their leadership and hard work in advancing this critical legislation. This bill includes key provisions that directly support TAPS priorities from the Love Lives On Act and Fry Scholarship Enhancement Act, such as: Removing the restrictive "hold oneself out to be married" clause Preserving Fry Scholarship eligibility for remarried surviving spouses Expanding Fry Scholarship access to families who lost a loved one within 120 days of discharge These changes represent meaningful progress in honoring and supporting those grieving the death of a military loved one. #Legislation #Veterans #SurvivorSupport #Advocacy

May is Mental Health Awareness Month "22 A Day" Every day, we lose approximately 22 veterans to suicide. As a veteran, I find this number devastating and personally confronting. It represents a failure in our duty to those who served our nation with valor. Transitioning from military to civilian life is an immense challenge many face in isolation. The scars of battle are not always visible, and the internal struggles can be overwhelming. "22 a Day" isn't just a statistic; it's a call to action for us to step up and provide the support and understanding that our brothers and sisters in arms deserve. Here’s how we can start making a real difference: - Educate Ourselves and Others: Awareness is the first step. Knowing how to identify and respond to mental health issues can save lives. - Support with Action: There are many organizations dedicated to veteran support. Whether through volunteering, fundraising, or advocacy, getting involved makes a tangible impact. - Encourage Open Dialogue: We must create environments where it’s safe to discuss mental health without stigma. Let’s foster communities that listen, understand, and act. This is more than a veteran issue; it’s a societal one. It reflects our values and our humanity. We must now be the protectors of those who protected us. Let’s honor their service with our unwavering support. The time to act is now—because behind every statistic is a life worth saving. The battle doesn't end when they come home. https://mission22.com/ https://lnkd.in/gmT_cbsf https://lnkd.in/gCN2n4M2 https://lnkd.in/gxwcNCWq #Army #Navy #MarineCorp #AirForce #SpaceForce #CoastGuard #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #May #Veterans #SupportOurVeterans #22ADay #Veteran #Mission22 #TilValhallaProject #MilitaryVeteranProject #Support22Project

This is about more than just us—it’s about everyone who has fought for our #exceptional military families before us, and those standing with us now. We are honored to continue this important work. Supporting our most vulnerable families isn’t something we can do alone. We need to come together to improve policies and processes at every level—local community, state and federal. We must also be innovative and consider ways to make life easier for these families, like how to transfer IEPs and Medicaid waivers across state lines, to ensure that these families have the support they need. Partners in PROMISE, Executive Director Michelle Norman stated, “These are quality of life issues that impact readiness and retention. We need to do everything we can to support these military families.” Improving the EFMP program will improve military readiness and retention. It’s going to take all of us working together to make it happen. Join us in advocating for our #exceptional military families by supporting initiatives that improve the EFMP program and enhance the quality of life for those who serve. Whether it’s contacting your local representatives, sharing this message, or getting involved with organizations like Partners in PROMISE, every action counts. #PartnersInPROMISE #CommunityMatters #SupportOurFamilies #MilitaryStrong #AdvocacyInAction #militaryfamilies #EFMP #ExceptionalFamilies #SpecialNeedsAdvocacy #EducationForAll #Changemakers #military #specialEducation #CNNHomefront

Last month, our Executive Director, Beth Kramer, attended the virtual 9th Annual Elizabeth Dole Foundation virtual conference— the premier conference for those who support military and veteran caregivers in America. One powerful takeaway: the urgent needs of caregivers are growing. According to a new RAND study, 42% of military/veteran caregivers under age 60 experience depression, almost 4x the rate of non-caregivers. If you are a caregiver and need help – contact us today. We have tools, groups and resources to support you. Learn more about how we can support caregivers in our community. What can you do beyond “thank you for your service?” 1. Pay attention to critical bills and push Congress to support the veterans and active duty soldiers who Congress sent to war. If you send them to fight, you’ve gotta take care of them afterwards. 2. Support organizations that help our veterans. I’m a big fan of Stop Soldier Suicide - an organization working to identify at risk veterans and to connect them to peers and mental health professionals. 3. Check in on friends and colleagues who served. 4. “Thank you for your service” is okay - especially when it is backed up with action. 5. On a final note, talk to kids so they understand civic duty. If you need help, here’s my Veterans Day talk for elementary kids. https://lnkd.in/eEJ-kCWw
