About us
Suicide is a complex problem that disproportionately impacts the military community. Stop Soldier Suicide is the only national nonprofit focused solely on solving the issue of suicide among U.S. veterans and service members. Our team is laser-focused on research and care that is specific to reducing veteran and service member suicide. Our vision is a nation where veterans and service members have no greater risk for suicide than any other American. We have an aggressive goal to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% no later than 2030.

Companies like Blackstone are critical partners in the fight against military suicide and a powerful example for others to follow. Thank you, Stephen A. Schwarzman, for leading the way and fostering an environment where veterans are both respected and valued for the unique skills and experiences they bring to the table.

Proud of the Blackstone Veterans Network which led a “ruck march” last week, carrying weighted packs through Central Park in support of Stop Soldier Suicide. Veterans and those still serving deserve our utmost respect - not just today, but every day. They can bring so much value to an organization, which we’ve seen at our firm and in the 100,000+ veterans, veteran spouses and caregivers hired across our portfolio companies. #VeteransDay

Today, our nation celebrates Veterans Day, established seventy years ago as an official federal holiday to pay tribute to the men and women who have served their country through military service. As Stop Soldier Suicide joins with our fellow Americans to honor those veterans and recognize the sacrifices that such service requires, we are mindful that “freedom is never free.” While most service members return home ready and able to rejoin their families and contribute to their communities, many have difficulties with that transition. Other veterans experience challenges later in life, whether from mental health concerns such as PTSD, chronic pain attendant to military service, or life events that can rob them of hope. For some, this can lead to despair and suicidal thoughts. Tragically, it can result in death by suicide for far too many. The enormity of the problem of veteran suicide can seem overwhelming. Since the War on Terror began in 2001, more than 131,000 veterans have been lost to suicide as compared to the 7,085 confirmed combat deaths that occurred during the same timeframe. Decades of concerted effort and billions of dollars have been spent to curb this epidemic, yet suicide deaths continue to rise. At Stop Soldier Suicide we embrace the fight against veteran suicide. As SSS moves into its 15th year, we employ a proactive and disruptive approach to generating impact at scale. By integrating suicide-specific learnings from our ROGER telehealth program with our award-winning Blackbox™ suicide intelligence platform, we are gaining unique insights into the drivers of suicide. Our goal is to create the innovative tools needed to identify those veterans in imminent peril and to provide real-time interventions for those most at risk. As always, Stop Soldier Suicide will continue to provide free evidence-based clinical treatment and supporting resources for veterans struggling with suicide. Abraham Lincoln remarked, “Any nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.” The Stop Soldier Suicide team honors those heroes on this Veterans Day. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the donors, partners and devoted staff who, throughout the years, have helped position us as a leader in veteran suicide prevention. We could not do this vital work without you.
