The human resources business has become far more complex over the past few years. That’s what Helena Pagano, chief people and culture officer, Sun Life, said in her conversation with Canadian HR Reporter. “We’ve become the change agents, change facilitators,” she says, adding that that’s “a really critical role for HR to play more and more”. HR was at the forefront when it comes to contending with the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the workplace. That was one of the changes that have happened to HR, says Pagano. On top of that, “people's expectations have changed,” she says. “A diverse workforce brings different issues and differing needs to the workplace.”

73% of HR leaders and 85% of C-Suite leaders think the term 'HR' is outdated. So when will we kill the title and embrace the new profession? Just what to call the next evolution of 'HR' is still facing an identity crisis. People & Culture? People Operations? People Experience? Just 'People'? Regardless, what's clear is that 'brand HR' is rooted in the old school process and policy — not the strategic and commercial domain our profession has shifted toward. Naming convention aside, what are these progressive 'HR' teams focusing on to put the title to bed and embrace these progressive traits? Here's where C-Suites think HR will take a leading role: • Talent management and workforce planning • Employee health and wellbeing • Diversity, equity and inclusion What is your team doing to shift the needle on these practices, to move beyond HR and embrace the next stage of the profession? Seeing that 86% of employees fear HR really hit home. When employees are afraid to approach HR, the entire organization suffers. What if HR wasn't seen as a source of fear, but as a trusted partner in the workplace? I've personally witnessed how disconnects between leadership and employees can create a culture where people don't feel safe to speak up. At Champion, during a time of rapid growth, we faced similar challenges—employees felt unheard, and HR wasn't always perceived as approachable. That's why it became clear: we needed to rebuild trust by putting the right people in the right seats. By focusing on transparency, empathy, and tailored team dynamics, we turned things around. This is exactly where Aptive Index can help. With our psychometric assessments, we uncover the natural strengths and drives of individuals, ensuring the HR team—and the entire company—is aligned with the right roles. It's not just about processes; it's about understanding people. How is your company tackling this? #HR #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture

In defense of HR: A perspective worth considering The narrative of "HR is the villain" seems to echo across professional platforms far too often. But let’s pause for a moment and consider: At its core, HR exists to serve as the bridge between people and the organization. Like any function, it reflects the values and priorities of the leadership it operates under. When workplace cultures feel toxic, it’s often a symptom of broader organizational challenges—not HR working in isolation. Yes, there are bad practices and individuals in every profession, but those don’t define the entire field. In fact, HR professionals are often working tirelessly behind the scenes—navigating policies, advocating for employees, and fostering environments where people can thrive. Let’s not lose sight of this: Great HR is about building trust, enabling growth, and making people the priority. It’s not an easy job, but it’s a critical one. We’re proud of the work we do in HR and the impact we create for our people and organizations every day. What’s one way you’ve seen HR make a difference in your workplace? Let’s celebrate the wins. 💬 #hrleadership #workplaceculture #peoplefirst #talenttriumph #hrworld #hrsolutions
