"It is time for the scientific community — including government, nonprofit research institutions, and business — to fully embrace #philanthropy as a critical strategic partner in advancing a national science agenda" This is a potentially transformative step. Missed in the important arguments in this report is the unique value philanthropy can play in an integrated systems-level #metascience that escapes the suboptimization of research programs in both the public and private sector. While various scientific programs around the world achieve marvelous results, almost all program leaders emerge with inherent biases and organizational #remits that force thinking about needs in terms of solutions for which they have a vested interest if not a fiduciary responsibility. We need a kind of science program development that complements what we otherwise do so well. Philanthropy is the only type of funding has an opportunity to engage in something like the #SixPaths framework of Blue Ocean Strategy applied to science. We need a metascience that can be as aggressively cross-cutting as the choices made by many consumers to bundle a diversity of heterogeneous offerings to meet their often ineffable cross-cutting needs.
