Clinical trials are crucial to the development of new drugs, medical treatments, and therapeutics. However, wide swaths of the American population are not adequately represented in the clinical trials and do not benefit equitably from this research. In an interview with Issues in Science and Technology, Gloria Coronado and Jason Resendez — who served on the committee that wrote our recent report on the issue — discuss the causes and consequences of this underrepresentation as well as steps researchers and policymakers should take to remedy it. "The basic methodology of data — as collected by real-world institutions obeying real-world forces of economy and scale — systematically leaves out certain kinds of information." A recent Issues in Science and Technology essay from philosopher C. Thi Nguyen argues that data is inherently limited, and that those who use data should learn how to interrogate and interpret it rather than simply treating it as objective.
