The energy landscape is changing in #Washington state, and the resource mix on the power grid is shifting as the state works to meet decarbonization goals and timelines in upcoming years. National Public Power Week 2024 is coming to a close, but the contributions of public power utilities are worth celebrating year-round! DID YOU KNOW? 💡 Approximately 2,000 public power utilities provide electricity to 54 million people across the U.S. 💡 On average, public power customers have the lowest utility bills. 💡 Public power utilities operate efficiently and invest 9% more of revenues in their communities. This week, we launched the American Powerhouse ad campaign and brought conservative leaders from 14 states to Capitol Hill to educate policymakers on the need for grid modernization and permitting reform. "America cannot be truly energy dominant without secure, reliable, and affordable energy," says Conservative Energy Network CEO John Szoka. The AUC works to ensure that Albertans struggling to pay their utility bills, or struggling to have their utilities reconnected, are referred to the right supports to keep their lights on and homes warm during the winter months. The AUC has a policy in place to ensure that Albertans are not disconnected in the coldest periods of the year. Utility companies are not allowed to disconnect residential customers between October 15 and April 15 for electricity service, and between November 1 and April 14 for natural gas service, or at any time when the temperature will be below zero degrees Celsius in the 24-hour period after the pending disconnection. Further, the AUC has a vulnerable customer protection program in place to support Albertans who are disconnected from electricity and gas service going into the winter season. Beginning in October, utility service providers attempt to contact anyone who is in arrears or disconnected from gas and electric utility service with the goal of working together to investigate options to lower bills, reduce energy consumption and reconnect service. If you or someone you know is struggling to pay their utility bills or is in need of short-term billing assistance, please contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate who is available to assist with disconnection issues and with arranging utility bill payment plans on your behalf.
