🚀 Co-Op Advertising in Franchise Brands: Why It's Time for a Fix Co-op advertising has been a staple in franchise marketing, helping franchisees pool resources for some great campaigns. But let’s face it—the traditional "DMA" (Designated Market Area) models are showing their age. Here are a few things to consider: 🤷♂️ Flexibility Issues: The old co-op structures often use one-size-fits-all messaging, leaving franchisees with limited control over what actually works in their markets. 🔍 Lack of Transparency: Many franchisees struggle to see the ROI of their ad spend, which makes it tough to know if their efforts are paying off. 📈 Missed Digital Opportunities: With digital marketing on the rise, there’s a chance to get more targeted and localized with messaging. Unfortunately, many co-ops haven't adapted yet. The good news? We can modernize the approach! Have you caught wind of Tom Dowd's reflections upon stepping into the CEO position at F45, one of the most rapidly expanding fitness franchises? “Before I joined F45, a lot of basics were being missed.    Right away I realized we weren’t capturing any 1st party data from our membership base, and we had a HUGE membership base.   So one of my first initiatives was to collect email addresses, starting a newsletter, and a blog.    The typical health and wellness consumer loves to share and engage with edutainment style fitness content, so there was a massive opportunity with the newsletter and blog.   But what really helped us level up was being specific in our targets, understanding SEO, making sure the content actually hit with our customers and not that we were just putting content out there for content’s sake.   We also kept this attitude with paid acquisition channels as well. Digital Marketing is instantaneous, making it the perfect avenue to test initiatives. Are Franchise Brands Helping Their Franchisees with Multiple Approved Advertising Options? 🔍 More Choices, More Work When franchise brands offer their franchisees multiple “approved” local advertising solutions—whether it’s different agencies or platforms—they might think they’re providing flexibility. But in reality, they’re adding more to the franchisees’ plate. 💸 Costs and Complexity Add Up Instead of simplifying their lives, franchisees now have to spend time, money, and resources evaluating each option. Agencies can be costly, with fees and media markups quickly adding up. Plus, each option comes with its own targeting strategies, audience setups, and reporting methods. ⚖️ Inconsistency and Complexity The result? Inconsistency across the brand, increased complexity, and much more work for the franchisees. By trying to offer choice, brands are actually setting their franchisees up for a tougher road. ✅ Streamline for Success Sometimes, less is more. A single, well-chosen partner could streamline processes, reduce costs, and ultimately set franchisees up for greater success.

Applebee’s was named the “official grill + bar” of the most lucrative sports league in America My first thought was “how and why did Applebee's of all places get this gold mine of an opportunity to be partnered with the NFL" The amount of money companies are willing to spend to take a piece of the NFL’s spotlight is very obvious ($7 million for a 30 second Super Bowl commercial is only a part of it) I’ve dabbled in Applebee’s once or twice, but their business model that has led them to becoming the third largest sit-down dining chain in America is interesting... It is the name behind 1,642 total franchises and is owned by Dine Brands, a public company, that “nurtures and grows the most beloved restaurant brands” It is a 100% franchise model business. They don’t own the real estate where the restaurants are, they don’t run the day-to-day ops, they provide the name, brand, and reliable business model that attracts customers Some stipulations in their franchising agreements caught my eye… Every franchisee is required: → To contribute 3.25% of gross sales (reserve right to raise up to 5%) to a national advertising fund which “funds the development of national promotions, television and radio commercials, print advertising materials, and digital marketing” → Must contribute 0.5% of gross sales to local marketing in their area If we do the math, these stipulations alone account for $141.7 million being dedicated to national marketing with another $21.8 million being used for local scale - the Applebee's brand is everywhere They highlighted a strategic priority in their 10-k annual report:  → “Significant investments have been made and will continue to be made in marketing across traditional and digital channels to drive traffic to our restaurants” A decision to market with the largest sports league in America seems significant and I am curious to see the deal specifics when they come out First course of action: Spend $40 in the NFL store, you get 20 wings free Just in time for the NFL draft where new jerseys, merchandise, and in some cases hope will be brought to fan bases everywhere #sports #sportsbiz #linkedinsports

For 16 years, the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) has held constant at 12 teams. The league is now planning to grow 33% over the next 4 years. Just 6 months since the Golden State Warriors announced a new WNBA team coming to the Bay, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is "pretty confident" that the league will grow to 14 teams by 2026 and 16 teams by 2028. Now is the moment for the WNBA to jump in the spotlight: 🏀 18.7 million viewers watched the NCAA Women's March Madness Final between Iowa and South Carolina 🏀 Caitlin Clark's No. 1 selection by the Indiana Fever at the 2024 WNBA Draft drove the choice to put 36 of 40 Fever games on national broadcasts 🏀 Current TV deals with ESPN, CBS, Amazon and ION Media Networks end after the 2025 season, creating an opening for a new rights negotiation 🏀 Engelbert named Philadelphia, Toronto; Portland, Denver, Nashville, Tennessee, and South Florida as potential expansion destinations. __ 💡 My takeaway → The soaring momentum for women's sports provides a leading indicator for where to find career opportunities. New franchises unlock many open roles as the owners and executives are building a business team from scratch!
