Research infrastructures have become crucial for managing complex, costly instruments and driving innovation. Recent developments include the creation of decentralized networks of independent labs and significant investments from the Next Generation EU Plan (PNRR) in Italy. These changes present opportunities and challenges, such as optimizing interactions and managing intellectual property. A Round Table discussion on 10th Semptember at NanoInnovation has been together stakeholders to explore these issues, share best practices, and enhance the integration and efficiency of research infrastructures.

Excited to have participated in the second Sandpit event for the Digital Twins Beyond Observed Capabilities (DTBOC), which took place in London on the 25th and 26th of November 2024. This project is a remarkable collaboration between the Digital Twins Network+ (DTNet+) and the Resilience Beyond Observed Capabilities Network+ (RBOC Network+), funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The second sandpit focused on advancing the value propositions identified during the first sandpit in August. Our discussions centred around exploring the benefits Digital Twins bring to transport resilience, identifying socio-technical challenges to their implementation, and developing innovative solutions to address those challenges. The event concluded with an exciting series of pitches on the second day, resulting in some outstanding research questions and proposals. These outcomes pave the way for groundbreaking applications of DT technology to enhance the resilience of the UK’s transport networks against catastrophic disruptions. It was a fantastic experience to collaborate with experts and contribute to this exciting and impactful initiative. Looking forward to seeing these proposals evolve into actionable outcomes!

ICYMI: Tulsa was one of 12 Tech Hubs — out of the 31 regions to receive that designation last year — to be awarded funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The roughly $51 million in funding was awarded to the Tulsa Hub for Equitable and Trustworthy Autonomy (THETA), a consortium led by Tulsa Innovation Labs, to strengthen the region’s capacity in autonomous systems through advanced manufacturing and deployment of technologies critical to the future of national and economic security. “It’s a defining moment,” Jennifer Hankins, managing director of Tulsa Innovation Labs, told Tulsa World Media Company. “It signifies that we have a right to lead in some of these advanced industries. And I think for me — especially as an economic developer — it signifies that we have all of the great ingredients we need, right here in Tulsa. The Intelligent Systems Laboratory (LSI) is part of the consortium of the project “SEGVAUTO 5Gen. Innovating for the mobility of the future” in the framework of the Call for aid for R&D projects carried out in collaboration between research groups in the Madrid region. LSI leads the objective related to the design of advanced traffic and mobility management systems for micro and macro decision-making based on hybrid intelligence and collective data.

Quantum is heating up in Europe — last year, investors pumped $793m into the sector, a 50% increase compared to the year before.
