Technical madness of the 21st century Modern horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) are designed for aerodynamic efficiency, similar to aircraft wings. This results in long, thin blades where less than 5% of the total swept area — at the very tips — generates the majority of the torque through maximum leverage. The rest of the blade, particularly near the root, contributes minimally to energy production but adds significant material and structural costs. Thousands of tons of steel and concrete are required to keep this arrangement standing, while much of the wind energy passes through unaffected or inefficient regions of the rotor. Bravo to Ørsted for successfully piloting a huge innovation in offshore wind construction! Traditional pile driving installations for offshore wind foundations can create sound waves at 174db at 500m away. That’s louder than a shotgun blast right next to you, and loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss. Not only that, but it repeats every few seconds, for weeks [1]. Keep in mind that sound travels more than 4x faster and much farther in water. You can imagine the damage caused to sensitive marine life for many kilometres around. Their jetting process changes the installation method altogether, reducing the noise levels by 99% to a level just above the ambient noise of the ocean. Other claimed benefits include reduced cost of installation, which makes it a very promising innovation for the industry AND marine life.
