It’s a hat-trick for our founder! Phil, who sits at the helm of our independent engineering consultancy with son Mike, was thrilled to be invited back - for a third consecutive year - to Coventry University. With such an impressive pedigree, Phil’s expertise is often called upon across the UK, and this latest visit was no exception. Phil, who delivered a series of lectures spanning his field of expertise to BEng students, said: “It was great to be invited back to Coventry University for a third year. “I delivered a series of lectures on lifts and escalators, RIBA stages of work from a real-world perspective, and The Building Safety Act to 35 BEng students. "It was a great session and we had a good discussion with the students." He added: “A big thank you to Dr. Monday Ikhide, PhD CEng MCIBSE MIET, for inviting me and organising it.” If you’re interested in reaping the benefits of Pearson Consult’s expertise in 2025 then please reach out to our Directors Philip Pearson, CEng, MCIBSE, MIET and Mike Pearson here on LinkedIn, call +44(0) 3301 335579, email info@pearsonconsult.com, or please visit https://lnkd.in/eM7ez-fK for more about our services. I have been fortunate to be involved in and to have read so many articles about why saving design and technology as a curriculum subject is so important, but this one https://bit.ly/3C32kC2, written by Laura Tuck, R&D team Lead at The Washing Machine Project, really nails it. Where learning is fun, it is often infectious. Where possible, it needs to be connected to students' real-world experience. In my opinion, there is no better way of delivering careers advice, information, and inspiration than through curriculum delivery. We also need to recognise that the purpose of school is to prepare young people to step confidently into a complex and fast-changing society. The use of the word 'snobbery' in this article is, in my opinion, genius. It nails why the subject is where it is; for too long, we have suffered from academic snobbery that refuses to position hands-on, kinesthetic learning as on a par with traditional academic education. This has to change. If we want more engineers, designers, problem solvers, and innovators to help shape our future, we need to support this subject now. This story highlights the significant impact that #CareerandTechnicalEducation (#CTE) programs can have on students. Phelps Architecture Construction and Engineering High School's engineering program has successfully ignited students' passion for #STEMcareers, with many drawing inspiration from the traditional professions of their family members. This connection to their family history adds a layer of depth and meaning to their studies, fostering a greater appreciation for the evolution of these professions. It's noteworthy how the school's #CTEprogram bridges the gap between traditional and #moderncareers. By incorporating elements of traditional crafts like blacksmithing into their #engineeringcurriculum, Phelps helps students see the relevance and #continuityofskills across generations. This approach not only honors the past but also prepares students for the future by equipping them with a versatile skill set. The success of Phelps' program underscores the importance of partnerships between schools and local employers. These collaborations provide students with real-world exposure and valuable insights into various #careerpaths. Moreover, they give employers a chance to connect with potential #futureemployees and understand the evolving needs and interests of the younger generation. One key takeaway from this story is the need for continued funding and support for CTE programs. As Olatundun Teyibo points out, these programs are essential for providing equal opportunities for all students, especially those from underserved communities. By investing in high-quality CTE programs, we can empower students to make informed #careerchoices and potentially reduce the burden of #collegedebt. The dedication and passion of both the students and teachers at Phelps are truly inspiring. The students' persistence, #academicgrowth, and willingness to take risks speak volumes about the supportive and engaging #learningenvironment that the school has fostered. Similarly, the teachers' commitment to providing comprehensive support and creating a fun and engaging #learningexperience is commendable.

Bucks - A place to train as an engineer! Increasing engineering skills for employers in Buckinghamshire is crucial for driving innovation, economic growth, and competitiveness in the region. With a growing demand for skilled engineers across various sectors, from aerospace to clean energy, Buckinghamshire needs to bridge the skills gap to meet industry needs. By investing in engineering education and training, we can create a talented workforce that attracts businesses, fosters technological advancements, and contributes to the county's prosperity. Reflecting on the incredible progress we've made through the Buckinghamshire Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) facilitated by @Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF), it's been a journey of collaboration, innovation, and dedication to enhancing the skills landscape in our region. I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the launch of the brand new School of Engineering and Built Environment at @Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) last week. This state-of-the-art facility is a testament to our collective efforts and commitment to providing top-notch education and training for the future workforce. A huge thank you to everyone involved in contributing to the LSIP, you spoke, and this is what happens! Together, we're shaping a brighter future for Buckinghamshire, empowering our businesses, and creating opportunities for growth and success. Tanya de Hoog’s inaugural address on accepting her role as 2024 president of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) in January, took as its theme “Engineering with purpose: aligning our values for global impact”. This encompasses goals including technical excellence, collaboration and knowledge sharing. What unifies them is de Hoog’s conviction that engineering can be a power for positive change. “What I feel excited about is that engineering as a profession, whether it’s civil or structural, serves society,” she says. De Hoog adds that this has gained significance amid pressing global challenges presented by carbon emissions and climate change. She says the idea of engineering as a service grew and flourished throughout her formative years and career. Born in the United States, she was raised and educated in Australia where her appreciation of the natural world, social amenity and community was nurtured, along with a passion for sport. De Hoog qualified as a structural engineer, completing her studies in Australia and the UK, and building a track record that includes projects across Australia, South East Asia, Europe, the US and the Middle East. During her career she has worked on a wide range of complex large scale structures, including stadium projects. A high point during her career at Thornton Tomasetti was being on the winning team for the contract to modernise the Wimbledon Number 1 Court tennis stadium. This entailed the complex design of a retractable roof in time for the 2019 Wimbledon tennis championships. “Winning the project was a personal highlight, but it was also one of the most technically complex projects I’ve worked on,” she says. “That’s special to me. Not everyone gets to work at that scale or on such a high profile project in terms of the contribution engineering can make.” “One reason that I accepted the presidency is to create a more positive narrative about engineers working together and making a difference in the world,” she says. She explains: “Sometimes when we talk about engineering, we talk about problems, but there are opportunities for flipping that narrative. “I believe in the power to inspire as a power to influence and that applies to everybody. You don’t have to be the president of the IStructE. You just have to have the courage to do it.” [NCE] #engineering
