"🏗️ Building in the same old ways won’t end the housing crisis. We need innovation to boost productivity." This article by Mathew Aitchison, Professor of Architecture and CEO of Building 4.0 CRC at Monash University, featured in "The Conversation" is a thought-provoking read! The Australian government has announced a new fund to provide A$500 million per year for much-needed social housing, but the industry lacks the capacity to build as many dwellings as the market needs ⏱️💰🏗️. To meet our housing targets, we need faster, cheaper, and higher-quality ways of building. In his article, Aitchison addresses all the phases: development, design, construction, operation, and, after all, that, end of life before challenging the government to invest just 1% of the billions being spent on building housing in innovation programs, which can deliver the increases in building productivity and capacity that Australia so badly needs. HUD’s Office of PD&R recently awarded a grant of $400,000 to West Virginia University (WVU) to support research on #innovative housing construction methods. Through this research partnership, WVU will collaborate with Omnis Building Technologies, LLC to develop innovative building panels made of geopolymer concrete and foam cores reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer grids. These panels, designed to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance thermal performance, will be used to construct a 1,600-square-foot building on WVU’s campus. The project aims to improve #construction efficiency, ease of assembly, and #sustainability, supporting the development of greener building technologies. Is Retrofit The New Architectural Era for Our Generation? Over the past couple months I've become more aware of the incredible benefits retrofitting brings to not only the profession but to the lives that will be impacted by bringing new life to forgotten or unused buildings. The UK is currently facing a housing crisis with figures from Shelter England stating that "at least 309,000 people homeless in England today" (Shelter England, 2023) and that "homelessness rises by 14% in a year as housing emergency escalates" (Shelter England, 2023). These are figures that as an industry we cannot ignore and must work towards tackling together. The strong push I see in practices today on working to tackle this national and international threat brings me hope that we can use architecture as a tool to provide logical solutions to these matters. I think it is also important to state that universities should also use these live-scenarios as opportunities to expand the student's development as young designers who will be entering the profession within a couple of years. Whether we like to think of it or not, we are all working towards this together and bring a diverse, multi-faceted and innovative approach. It's time to double-down on our efforts to connect and communicate with each other more and work with our respective local authorities to tackle the UK's housing crisis. #Architecture #Architects #ArchitectureSchool #Retrofit #Retrofitting #HousingCrisis #UKHousingCrisis

Planning Awards 2024 - Shortlisted! Now that made my day. Not only has the sun come out, but the joint submission by Urban Place Lab and Avison Young for the ‘Whitehill & Bordon Project Structuring Plan - Collaborative Masterplanning’ has been shortlisted in the category of planning for increased housing delivery in the 2024 Planning Awards! We've been working with landowners the DIO, Development Managers the Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company (JV between Taylor Wimpey and Dorchester Regeneration) on this multi-faceted community regeneration since 2014, and the project Structuring Plan has been both a constant and a flexible tool to allow so much more to be delivered than (accelerated) housing alone. Developed in close collaboration with East Hampshire District Council (+ their design advisors Feria Urbanism) and Hampshire County Council, the Structuring Plan review has allowed us to revise parcel structures for individual components of the site, assisting in accelerated phasing, integration with site services and a more nuanced approach to site clearance supporting the delivery of community infrastructure. Loosely following the German Bebauungsplan (B-Plan) model of a technical parameter-led masterplan / regulating plan (and associated text document), the process has encouraged a more organic evolution of place, ‘learning by doing’ and providing valuable exercises in collaboration and place making. https://lnkd.in/ezT4-Tiv
