EMBRACING THE NEXT EDGE It was a good run. Like any run -- You run your race, get your medals, then get out the way. And today, I get out of the way. Today, after more than 23 years of military service, I hang the uniform up, forever. You think about it and plan for it, then it happens. Granted -- military culture doesn't hand out Gold Rolexes when you hang the uniform up. I served in a culture too late for that fancy of a gift. But, If you think about the Gold Rolex cultures -- honoring a career wasn't about the gift. Retirement was about the legacy, the litany of the laudatory. Those great hours in the arena, come after those dark hours to get there. It was about sacrificing, & returning to, the freedom. Once more into the fray. Once more, to keep going. Forward, always. The tradition of these gifts, can call back to at least the arenas of Ancient Rome. Gladiators who earned their freedom, would take a wooden sword, a Rudis, with them into retirement. Having fought their fight, they earned their freedom, then left the arena for a new generation. They left the arena, to probably never return as fighters themselves. They entered whatever the "Old Guard" or vanguard was called in their eras. Then you're there. And you have to ask yourself, what do I do with that? How do you inspire another generation to face their darkest hours? How do you prevent over commiting yourself, while you're staring at your own progression & decline? How do you know, when you know? Those questions come to each of us, in their own way. And those questions, always come. But for a brief moment, for a small pause, all of those questions are fully and perfectly answered. Then once more, you choose a new fray. It was a great run. And the die has been cast. #coastguard #uscg #training #retirement #military

Here is the content translated from the image: Title: Speech on general considerations for the Municipality of Noord Beveland The text emphasizes the role of education in transforming people's cognition and abilities, highlighting that educational systems are essential to promote planetary consciousness. He cites the Global Education Futures report, which describes education as a powerful but underutilized tool for intentional evolution. The report calls for education to help people learn in ways that contribute to a healthy and desirable future on Earth. Several educational practices are recommended to establish planetary consciousness: 1. Collaboration and co-creation-based learning: encourages working together towards shared goals and solving problems collaboratively. 2. Empathy-based learning: It focuses on understanding and sharing the feelings of others, promoting compassion and a sense of connection with all beings. 3. Intercultural and interreligious learning: it aims to recognize different cultures and beliefs, appreciating the differences of humanity and promoting unity. 4. Nature-based learning: emphasizes the connection with the natural world, the understanding of our interdependence with all living beings and the cultivation of respect and management for nature. The text argues that education should also be a tool for letting go of obsolete paradigms, suggesting a change in organizational forms for learning. It supports learning communities that see the evolutionary transition as their own responsibility. The transformation of these communities within a global learning ecosystem is seen as essential to the rise of planetary consciousness in humanity. The writer proposes to create a "University for the Planet", imagined as a global institution that promotes planetary consciousness. This entity would act as a catalyst for change, coordinating global efforts while working with local groups to spread planet-centric learning through both teaching and project-based initiatives. The University would support education not only for humans, but also for technological and ecological systems, including artificial intelligence, robotics and non-human ecosystems. Let me know if you want more details about any part!

Let's talk about mnemonics... For decades, aspiring #Marines who have stepped onto the yellow footprints at the recruiting depots in Paris Island and San Diego have been introduced to the Corps' #leadership traits with the #mnemonic, JJ DID TIE BUCKLE: justice, judgment, dependability, initiative, decisiveness, tact, integrity, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty and endurance. Similarly, the #Army has its own mnemonic for its institutional #values, LDRSHIP: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. In mid-August, the Corps announced the addition of a 15th trait, #empathy, and the subsequent change to their time-honored mnemonic to JJ DID TIE BUCKLEE: https://lnkd.in/gkeqNnSN Now, no one is going to argue about the relevance of empathy. Along with #compassion and #humility, empathy is one of the three most underrated - and undervalued - leadership traits. The more we learn about destructive/toxic/counterproductive leadership, the more we realize how important those three are to effective and productive leadership. But the mnemonic? Oh, that's getting plenty of attention. There's an old adage when it comes to #online discussion threads: "never read the #comments." There are times you want to ignore that sage bit of wisdom. This is one of those times. The comments on the Reddit page r/USMC on this subject is a mix of inane, insane, and outright hilarious. And if you can count on Marines for something, it's to improvise, adapt, and overcome. The full thread is here - https://lnkd.in/guGZ4_-5 - but let me summarize some of their suggested mnemonics: 😂 JJ TIE DIED BUCKLE 🙄 JJ DIED TIE BUCKLE 😕 JJ TEEBLE, I'D DUCK 😖 JEJ DID TIE BUCKLE 🤔 JEDI LED BUICK JET If all else fails, you can just ask ChatGPT and the responses get even weirder.

New product development – an example from medieval military history! Yes, really. Warfare and military ambition are two great drivers in the invention of new disruptive technologies, however, without improving and perfecting them, they would never be adopted. So, let’s take a step back in time. Now, from an outsider’s perspective, medieval England was a period of endless battles. In 1066, the Battle of Hastings established the Norman rule of William the Conqueror. Then, several centuries later, civil war broke out as the House of Lancaster and the House of York fought for control of the English throne, bringing about arrival of the Tudor Dynasty in 1485 (yes, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I). As Britons entered the 16th century, there was one weapon that reigned supreme: the longbow. But with the invention on the musket on the horizon, was its dominance about to come to an end? This is the story of how weapons were developed in medieval England, and how both innovative AND adaptive improvements resulted in warfare being changed forever. There are lessons to be learned about new product development today… Click here to read our full article on this fascinating history: https://bit.ly/3YrKcej #newproductdevelopment #medieval #medievalhistory #england #battleofhastings #weaponry #medievalengland

This is a picture of 3 cousins, AJ Edwards, Shawn Edwards, and Nic Edwards honoring my grandpa, Art Lifferth, as he was laid to rest several years ago. It is probably one of favorite pictures. Grandpa Art was a WW II Army vet who worked in the map rooms in England for most of the war. He was involved in most of the major combats during World War II. During the D-Day landing prep, he was specifically assigned the mapping out the locations of the paratroopers and gliders who landed behind enemy lines in the hours before and after Normandy beach landings to meet the strategic objectives. D-Day, June 6, 1944, stands as one of the most pivotal days in world history. The battle plan for Operation Overlord took over a year to meticulously put together. By the end of that historic first day, 156,000 Allied soldiers had landed on the beaches of Normandy. Tragically, over 4,000 of these brave individuals lost their lives. Within just a few days, more than 326,000 troops, 50,000 vehicles, and 100,000 tons of equipment were deployed. This monumental effort led to the liberation of Northern France within two months, ending four long years of Nazi occupation. Remarkably, within less than a year from D-Day, the entire Nazi regime fell. The outcome of D-Day changed the world for the better on every continent and brought in a new level of prosperity across every nation on earth! Lessons Learned: Pre-planning is imperative for important victories. The success of D-Day was built on a foundation of careful and extensive preparation. Adjusting on the fly is even more important. Despite the best-laid plans, the ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances was crucial in achieving success. As we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served, let us also draw inspiration from the strategic lessons that continue to resonate in our personal and professional lives. #DDay #History #Resilience #NeverForget
