Competitive markets along with the very objective metric of profits, have served our economies relatively well but in the nonprofit sector, competition for resources without a standardised and objective metric means that the benefits of competition, namely maximizing value and “creative destruction”, are often watered down, speculative, or missing completely. One big advantage that the nonprofit sector has is the absence of value-limiting anti-trust and anti-competitive legislation. Donors, philanthropists, and other funding providers should insist on collaboration to ensure knowledge and resource sharing (and optimization), which will break nonprofits out of their zero-sum attitudes and behaviours. Working for the Sri Lankan President’s office in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, I saw how strong competition between non-cooperating nonprofits for limited resources made everyone worse off (except a few resource holders.) Collaboration would have ensured far lower resource costs for all and a more strategic, efficient, and effective use of those resources.
Collaborative funds are one of the fastest growing giving mechanisms in philanthropy today. These funds leverage the power of the collective to address complex social issues. MacKenzie Scott allocated more than $1 billion to collaborative funds out of her $14 billion philanthropic efforts from 2020 - 2022. Panorama's Collaborative Learning for Impact Philanthropy initiative, in collaboration with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Global Summit for Collaborative Funds, and Philanthropy Together have provided new insights on why this model of funding benefits donors, nonprofit organizations, and the broader sector. https://bit.ly/3TUv6eL

There’s a major shift happening in the nonprofit world—and it’s driven by impact investing. 📈🌍 In the past, donations were largely seen as gifts with no strings attached. But now, many donors treat their nonprofit contributions with the same expectations they have for their impact investments—seeking 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁. We’ve been fortunate to work with impact investors and nonprofits, and the common thread is this: both want their funding to create 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭, 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦. For nonprofits, this shift opens doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and funding sources that were previously untapped. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. This past decade, the nonprofit world has seen an influx of large, unrestricted gifts to high-impact nonprofit organizations working on systems change. Over the past three years, Panorama has analyzed the impact of these gifts, like those of MacKenzie Scott, the Skoll Award for Social Innovation, The Audacious Project, or Co-Impact, and found that they lead to a stronger, sustained impact. Additional donor investment can only amplify the effects of these initial gifts. We're excited to present this resource to inform and inspire donors about the opportunity to direct more funding to organizations that have received multiple large gifts. With proven success managing multimillion-dollar philanthropic investments, these organizations are better prepared to leverage future larger gifts and ready to scale their impact. Nonprofit workers are the backbone of our communities—but their well-being is rarely prioritized in foundation funding. At the Walter & Elise Haas Fund, we’ve made nonprofit worker well-being a cornerstone of our work because nonprofit leaders are our essential partners. Our latest blog post by Pui Ling Tam highlights how funders can rethink practices to better support the people driving impact. 💡 Funders, let’s ask ourselves: Are we funding sustainability and capacity for nonprofit teams? Are we creating space for rest, reflection, and joy in our grants? How can we center nonprofit leaders as we invest in social change? This is a call to action.
