Take a look at this BBC Archive video clip from 1972, ‘The curious case of the blocked window’. In 1972 it seems that the concept of ‘Right of Light’ was not in place. Unfortunately, a new resident in Clacton on Sea was subject to being shadowed by a wooden structure due to his neighbour's preference for privacy. https://lnkd.in/eugK_kHS "I should leave those alone, if I was you...this is governed by the law of ancient lights." When Mr Max Jenkins bought his house - a substantial Victorian villa in the village of Bacton-on-Sea - he thought he'd snagged himself a bargain. There was only one, minor issue with the property - an unusual wooden structure, just three feet from his windows, obscuring the view of the sea - but he could surely dismantle that, couldn't he? Nationwide reporter Susan Hall investigates this bizarre case involving the "law of ancient light", and the reclusive Miss Day. Pager Power has recently written an article on right of light assessments and interior daylight surveys that we can provide. You can find these news articles here: https://lnkd.in/eJVvraQ6 Right of Light https://lnkd.in/d58P5mPS Interior Daylight Surveys The planning process is typically navigated by undertaking a Daylight and Sunlight Assessment, which Pager Power also provides: https://lnkd.in/eSQX8ZEB These services are in addition to our Daylight and Sunlight Assessment. #rightoflight #daylight #sunlight #daylightsunlight #daylightsurvey #planning #planningpermission

Thus opens one of the most hotly debated topics of "main street" towns today. Should the highway go through downtown and become the main street, which inevitably leads to "strodes" and "dangerous by design" thoroughfares in pedestrian-rich environments, or do you route the high-speed traffic around the main downtown while trying to lure the "business and tourist traffic" into your charming, courthouse, picturesque, arts and entertainment active town square? How do you make a US or State highway a complete street?
From the Archives: The Federal-Aid Highway Act "was to be the largest infrastructure project in the U.S., a great feat that would drastically change the shape of our country"...and it spelled the death of hundreds of small towns.

"At Nevada Outdoor School, we love talking with people about exploring the outdoors responsibly! One of the best ways we like to do this is through the Authority of the Resource technique: 1) Introduce yourself and take a moment for ice breaking conversation 2) Give an objective description of the undesirable behavior observed 3) Reveal/""interpret"" the implications of the undesirable behavior. Focus on how the behavior impacts to the resource or the experience of others. 4) Describe the desired behavior. Communicate appreciation for the resource and model desired behavior when possible. Describe agency norm when appropriate. Urban academics who adhere to structuralist beliefs may find this post challenging. In contrast to the predetermined framework they advocate, I recently proposed expanding the concept of the Situationists' wandering dérive beyond urban settings to encompass the universal flâneur's explorations. What aspects of this approach might seem random to them? #UrbanStudies #UrbanPlanning #Situationists #Flâneur

Another #throwbackthursday post... co-incidentally another from Cornwall, this time the Plen in St Just, in the far west. The 'plen an gwary', or 'playing place', was essentially a medieval open air theatre within which religious plays (e.g. the 14th century Ordinalia Cycle) were performed and other events held, e.g. wrestling and hurling. The site is bounded by a tall bank encircled by a ditch, the bank being partly rebuilt in the 19th century. Several years ago we undertook an electrical resistance survey of the interior, the results of which were altogether more complex than expected. Blue is low, orange, high, resistance. To the south the base of stone steps, maybe once the seats refered to by Borlase in the 18th century, were found and in the centre, a complex of features that were likely the 'Devil's spoon', an underground passage from where the Devil would spring during the Ordinalia. Recent research suggests that the audience for these congregated within the interior and the various scenes were played out around them on the bank, so the Devil would suddenly emerge in their midst. Other anomalies reflect partial survival of surfaces within the Plen, materials laid during the 19th century and likely also depredations from miners and others digging for treasure. This is a site at which further geophysical work would likely be beneficial. Of technical interest is the slight striping in the data near the eastern edge, likely to an electrical (earth) fault within an adjacent building. #cornwall #electrical #resistance #ordinalia #theatre #plen

🔍 Have you ever noticed subtle marks left behind in public spaces? I recently observed fascinating imprints of people's backs and heads on the wall behind a Tottenham Court Road station bench. These marks are not random; they tell a story of transient human presence. #Memory #PublicSpaces #HumanInteraction #History #UrbanExploration #BlogPost

Hello everyone! Today, I'd like to deliver into the fascinating topic of multiple intelligence theory development as theorized by the renowned psychologist Howard gardener. The Howard Garden Theory, proposed by Howard Gardner, suggests that there are multiple types of intelligence, including linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic intelligence. This theory emphasizes that individuals have unique strengths and weaknesses across these different types of intelligence. For more depth understanding you can refer to my video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/d4ScHCjp Let's engage in a lively and enriching discussion. "what is the relevance of gardener multiple intelligence theory in present context?"

Four important position papers were recently adopted by the NFPA Urban Fire Forum. Regardless if you are a Metro sized, community sized, or small-ish fire department, there are actions and information there for you. I appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Dan Munsey, MPA, EFO, CFO, and Rebecca Harned to develop the position paper on Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Fire Service. All of the papers from this year, and provious years, can be found here: https://lnkd.in/egtm4BXF

#makebridgesnotwalls It doesn't matter how many scriptures you have memorized - it doesn't matter how many academic publications you have studied - it doesn't matter how many pilgrimages you have visited - what matters is are you wise and conscientious enough to bring your understanding in the service of the people around you. Because people don't trust each other. They have become so suspicious , that even a good deed is considered to be done because you can profit from it. When you look at walls and bridges , you see they reflect this way of being: closed or open. Either you close yourself within walls , only to give birth to more suspicion and fear, or you connect with others through bridges, paving the way for an open society, where trust and kindness are going to rise. We must see that if we keep building walls , we are going to end in not even trusting ourselves, and there is going to be a final wall built between the phantom of us and what is real in us, ending any progress. So let us first build a bridge connecting to our real selves. Thus, we will finally know who we are and only then will we start knowing everyone else. While building bridges promotes unity and understanding, this view posits that there are scenarios where boundaries are necessary to protect and preserve distinct identities, safety, and order.
