Whatever the considered rights and wrongs of the action taken in this video (and others that regularly appear from around the world), the comments demonstrate yet again, many people’s inability to understand, appreciate and accept cultural difference. Having had the privilege to work with blue light services in more than one hundred countries around the world, the differences often far outweigh the commonalities. It’s easy to impose your own experience and learned methods on others and pass judgement, but I have rarely (if ever) negatively critiqued the operational actions of others in a context such as this. Operational actions and decisions are not just about training, equipment or competence, but often routed in a far deeper tradition and culture. Would I or my crew ever have done this? No, but me and those who came before me (and since) had a completely different frame of reference. I expect a pile on following this post, but remember, I’m not condoning the actions taken, I’m merely highlighting the need to appreciate difference. However you perceive it.
