This week is F1 weekend, and while visiting Spago, I had the incredible opportunity to see Wolfgang Puck himself walking around the restaurant. Witnessing him in action was a powerful reminder of the networking mastery that has propelled his illustrious career. He was there attending exclusive events for some of the F1 teams hosted at his restaurants, exemplifying his strategic approach to building meaningful connections. Three Networking Ideas to Learn from Wolfgang Puck: 1. Build Authentic Relationships: Wolfgang Puck emphasizes genuine connections with everyone—from customers and employees to industry peers and celebrities. His personal engagement makes people feel valued, fostering relationships based on mutual respect. 2. Leverage High-Profile Opportunities: By aligning himself with prominent events like the F1 weekend and the Academy Awards, Puck enhances his visibility and expands his network. These high-profile opportunities connect him with influential figures across various industries. 3. Mentorship and Collaboration: Puck believes in the power of mentorship and collaboration. By mentoring upcoming chefs and collaborating on unique projects, he not only fosters growth but also extends his professional network. In his book "In Never Eat Alone", Keith Ferrazzi recommends becoming a regular at great restaurants as a strategic way to expand your network. By frequenting the same establishments, you build relationships with the staff, who may eventually introduce you to the owner. When you bring guests and host events at the restaurant, you not only support their business but also create opportunities for mutual benefit. As a result, the staff and owner are more likely to reciprocate by introducing you to other interesting patrons, further expanding your network and opening doors to new connections. General best practice - get as close to you can to the workers directly interacting with your guests so you can truly understand the business. Ron Ruggless thanks for sharing the quote below! While there are various ways of doing this, the key thing - and often the hardest thing - is simply doing it. Clear some space on your calendar, roll up your sleeves to dive in! When I worked in banking we had mandatory officer participation, where we would take customer service calls once a month. This helped us see the how our work impacted our Customers, and I also learned more about our products and solutions for Customers' needs. How do you get more time with your frontline workers? Does your company have a practical strategy in place to encourage this action?
Remain Close to the Bussers - "The closer you are to the people in the very front of the frontline, the better understanding you actually have of what's happening in your business," Will Guidara , author of "Unreasonable Hospitality" and former owner of the distinguished Eleven Madison Park, told attendees Tuesday at the GuestXM - Now Powered by Black Box Intelligence™ Best Practices Conference in Irving, Texas.

For all of the hassle’s, battles and challenges thrown at the modern day F&B industry. The creative opportunities, elements and ability to disappear into the world of food and service remain. As I lecture and support those who I mentor and tutor, so often the need is for them to get out into the real business, inspiring teams, leading by example, training and sharing skills is 100% crucial. So often the industry forgets the stuff on the plate, the ‘smile teeth and welcome’ of the essential professional customer service and putting the venues best foot forward. Maybe the next time your service is up the wall ‘manage up’ get your seniors off the emails, stop the laptops and spending most of the day writing the rotas. The clue is to start to think like a paying customer…. #mentoring #traininganddevelopment #cateringconsultants www.johnbensonsmith.com

A brilliant midweek getaway to Oxford for the largest BCorp Festival, Louder Than Words, thanks to B Lab UK I was honoured to co-lead a workshop with the fabulous Louise Gatenby of The Good Board all around Building a Brave BCorp Board. Some of our key takeaways: 🗝️ PURPOSE - the purpose of the Board is to hold the business to its purpose. Don’t get sidetracked with the next tactical thing and miss the big strategic risk or opportunity - and that includes baking sustainability into your strategy. 🌎 GOVERNANCE - juggling a lot of complexity makes it hard to be brave. But that’s the job. To keep pace, evolve and create the space to see far enough ahead into the future 🧩 COMPOSITION - who makes up your Board? Do you have enough independence, diversity and expertise? 🫶 CULTURE - what’s it like? Dominant? Inclusive? Curious? Challenging? Supportive? What environment do you need to make brave decisions? Ultimately, building a brave board is about getting the balance right, with people that think differently and yet are aligned to one clear purpose. If you’re building a brave Board, we’d love to hear your experiences. Thanks to everyone that participated in the session - we had some great discussions.

On my way to judge a coffee competition, and I’m reminded of how vital community is in our industry. Competitions like these aren’t just about showcasing skills—they’re about bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other’s growth. As someone who has competed, coached, judged, and trained judges, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of a strong, supportive community. The coffee community thrives on collaboration and mutual support. Events like this allow us to celebrate our craft, learn from one another, and push the boundaries of what we can achieve. It’s inspiring to see so many passionate individuals come together. Supporting these competitionsl is crucial, not just by joining to gain something, but by truly contributing to the industry. Year after year, we see people come and go, but those who understand the importance of giving back consistently put in the time and effort. The community needs more of these dedicated individuals. These competitions provide a platform for baristas and coffee professionals to shine, gain recognition, and drive innovation in the industry. It’s through these shared experiences that we strengthen our community and elevate the standards of our craft. #coffeecompetitions #contribute #payitforward
