Today is LGSOC Awareness Day! So what is LGSOC?
- Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer is a rare disease that predominantly impacts younger patients than other types of ovarian cancer.
- Because symptoms can be non-specific and these patients might otherwise appear healthy, providers don't always think "cancer" first. Having a rare histology can also delay diagnosis, especially if the medical team doesn't have a pathologist who specializes in gynecologic oncology. It can take many months or even years before a patient is appropriately diagnosed.
- There are no FDA approved drugs specifically for LGSOC. Patients are given the same platinum-based chemotherapy as high-grade serous ovarian cancer, despite the vast differences in tumor biology.
- Around 80% of patients will experience a recurrence after front-line chemotherapy.
- Many of these young patients deal with anxiety of living with cancer indefinitely, losing their fertility, and being thrown into early menopause... it's mentally exhausting (see Amanda's video below👇🏽)
Keep an eye out today for more info on how you can support organizations that support LGSOC patients.

If you don’t know anything about Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer (LGSOC), take a moment to watch Amanda’s story. Diagnosed at 26 years old with LGSOC, Amanda shares her experience navigating this rare cancer, how it felt to experience a recurrence of LGSOC, and how vital accessing all kinds of resources was to her as she navigates through her cancer care.
Whether it’s the delayed path to diagnosis or the lack of FDA-approved treatments specifically for LGSOC, much more needs to be done to support this community. Amanda’s story is one of the many reasons why we have joined with the LGSOC community on this day to raise awareness.
