Looking back on 2024.... In the #MunichInnovationHub we believe that innovation is something to be done holistically: A good cause, technology, a sound business case, human empowerment as well as responsibility for now and the future. That’s why we began to host #AI #Salons. We want to open minds and look at new technological possibilities through the lens of humanities. So that we continue to innovate vividly and good. "A salon is a protected space, where a thoughtful selection of people and topics enables in-depth conversations.” with this Tobias Regenfuss opened the doors to our Salon on 👉 Innovation in/with music held the evening before this year’s  #TechRevolutionSummit2024 #HumanizingTech. The video gives a glimpse into this one. In summer we hosted a salon on 👉 AI & Love. Can we or: How do we fall in love with AI companions? "With technology becoming more and more human like – we need to look into feelings towards and for it – and examine their effects. Because we better shall try to act sovereignly and not get carried away by feelings and with too little reflection." Excited to share an update from Barcelona, where I’m attending the 3rd edition of the Generative AI Music Workshop at UPF! The workshop has brought together an inspiring group of participants, and I’ve had the opportunity to team up with Valerio Maiolo to create an AI-enhanced live performance. We’re performing as Binary Star—a name inspired by the two-body celestial system. While Valerio focuses on tonal elements, I’m handling percussion, leveraging RAVE and MLPs for audio and symbolic data generation within MaxMSP and Pure Data. In this prototype (developed by the end of Day 2), I’m using a custom RAVE model trained by Abhinay Khoparzi with an MLP modifying the latent dimensions in real time. The RAVE model is performing timbre transfer on input from the Digitakt, which generates foundational drum grooves as the source material. On Day 3, we’ll refine the setup further, adding more controls and live interaction capabilities. This has been a fantastic opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and learn alongside talented individuals pushing the boundaries of AI in music. Check it out. https://betafestival.ie/ Our performance lecture is on 2 Nov: +++ How to Buy/Own/Mint One Millilitre of the South China Sea (Nan Hai)? | Winnie Soon and Tzu-Tung Lee Forkonomy() is an art and activist project that critically explores sovereignty and ownership through a speculative question: can one buy or own a millilitre of the South China Sea? Despite being one of the world’s busiest waterways for international trade, the South China Sea is also among the most contested, with overlapping territorial claims from China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and others. These competing claims over its rocks, reefs, and undersea resources make the oceanic space not just geographically significant, but also economically, militarily, and politically charged. In the exhibition Unsettling the Algorithm: Seeds of Resistance, Winnie Soon and Tzu Tung Lee present a Forkonomy() meditation guide that invites audiences to reflect on the underlying tensions of the sea. Accompanying this are video documentations of the artists' symbolic act of "pirating" water from the South China Sea. A printed digital contract registered on the blockchain is also displayed, further emphasizing the work's engagement with contemporary issues of ownership and legality. In this performance lecture, the artists will introduce their creative trajectory and present a performance that invites the audience to buy, own, or mint one millilitre of the South China Sea. Through the act of contracting, participants are encouraged to engage in a conversation about the concept of ownership and sovereignty. +++

In case you missed Oktoberfest, here’s another good excuse to head to Germany. Berlin-based artist Andrea Familari used NLX to create an interactive piece where art gallery goers have an AI-powered conversation with a 3D avatar modeled after himself. 🎨 The exhibit, Familari’s “Relate – Talk with Me” is at the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität in Dortmund, Germany, from October 19 to February 2. 🇩🇪 NLX supports all forms of critical inquiry into the potential effects of AI on human relationships and society, but we especially love this remarkably creative and engaging approach. One of the reasons that Andrea chose NLX technology is that he could build the conversational experience himself without an engineering background. This is a differentiator for NLX that puts the power of AI into the hands of the people in charge of the experience, artists and business teams alike. The Northern Lights and Our Growing Disdain for Screens- Two remarkable phenomena unfolded last week, both rooted in nature. The first was the awe-inspiring appearance of the Northern Lights, visible from a variety of locations without the need to venture hours into remote northern territories. The second phenomenon was the public’s reaction to the photos of the event, especially those captured using long-exposure settings on smartphones. While these images spread quickly online, they bore little resemblance to what people actually saw with their own eyes. The common response? "If I’m only going to experience this through my phone screen, why even bother going out?" This sentiment reflects a shift that’s already underway—a growing skepticism and weariness towards screens in our image-saturated, AI-driven world. Whether we realize it or not, we crave genuine experiences—those that engage our senses, foster human connection, and embrace the imperfections of reality. We want to witness things firsthand, and our tolerance for flawlessly aesthetic, artificial imagery is fading fast. We’re increasingly seeking the real, the imperfect, and the unfiltered moments that resonate more deeply than any digital representation ever could. While the Northern Lights are undeniably beautiful, an entire generation that has only seen them through long-exposure photography was left disappointed by the difference between these enhanced images and the real thing. Ironically, many felt compelled to share photos of something they hadn’t truly witnessed themselves, though they were right there at the event! Yet, getting out of the house was still worth it. The lights were a spectacular sight, even without the technological enhancements. The video I captured, which closely resembles what I actually saw, serves as a reminder that sometimes the simplest, unfiltered experiences are the most rewarding, as opposed to what I could have generetaed using #Sora, #Luma or #runway… The reality is simple and timeless: there is nothing new under the sun. The more we talk about #AI, the more we are drawn back to the age-old question of what it means to be human — a conversation that has been happening for thousands of years.

The SHIFT PROJECT (HORIZON EUROPE) has produced a new video for heritage professionals 📢 It is part of the work being done by the 13 partners aiming to make cultural heritage more accessible, inclusive, and appealing using the latest advances in technology. The video explains some of the work SHIFT has been doing to produce a Text-to-Speech tool for cultural heritage. The tool uses affective speech synthesis to link emotions with acoustics. In one example, a video provided by the Balkan Museum Network was not only translated and voiced over using AI, but the voice was processed to carry affect, that is, to convey relevant emotions.
