Transitioning from military to civilian life can feel like navigating uncharted waters, even if you weren't in the Navy like me (you know, I had to add that in there). 😂 The journey on this new path can be incredibly challenging because our military job, rank, and uniform are significant parts of our identity. 🤔 I recently heard an affirmation that started as an 'I am' statement. When I said it, it hit me that for over 20 years as a Navy Nurse, I greeted my patients with "I'm (whatever my rank was at the time) Simmons. I'm the nurse taking care of you today." Those words affirmed who I was and how I served in the Navy. Even though work was crazy most of the time, I always strived to give my patients the best possible care in every way. 😔 When I left that world, I had an identity crisis that I never expected to experience. It's not something that others talk about. For all the retired female veterans out there still grappling with this transition—you're not alone. Many of us face the same struggles, questioning our purpose and direction. 💡But here's the truth: Our core essence gives us our true identity—the combination of values, personality, characteristics, skills, and talents that make us who we are. All those things go with us no matter where we are, what we do, or what we wear. The discipline, leadership, and problem-solving abilities we've honed are not just military skills. They're life skills that guide us in this new chapter of life. 🙌🏾 The uniform may be retired, but our potential isn't. Because of who we are and our experiences, we can step forward confidently, knowing that the best is yet to come. Today isn’t about our usual laughs or the daily grind. Veterans Day is a day to step back, remember, and honor those who made the boldest shift of all—the choice to serve, to protect, to sacrifice. We wear the poppy not just as a symbol, but as a promise that we remember and respect their courage. At Bold Shift, we’re all about pushing forward, challenging the norm. A "tribe" generally refers to a social group that shares a common culture, heritage, or interest, often with strong bonds of loyalty and mutual support. In a traditional sense, it describes a group of people connected by kinship, language, and shared customs, living together or identifying as a community. However, in modern contexts, "tribe" has also come to signify groups formed around shared passions, values, or goals, whether in the realms of sports, brands, or social movements. This community aspect is powerful, as tribes provide a sense of belonging, identity, and purpose for their members. Jason Van Camp has created just that, a tribe, it’s called Warrior Rising and they are doing phenomenal things to support veterans. I feel pretty lucky to be be part of that tribe. This tribe just happens to be forged through commitment and honor of Service to this great nation, one we call duty. Once completed, it’s an alumni organization thats started with a DD-214, a veteran status. 1.14 million. It's the population of Baltimore, MD and Albuquerque, NM combined. Taylor Swift sold that many copies of her album Midnights. It's the number of millionaires living in California. Also, according to the Veterans Administration, the estimate of the number of servicemembers lost in conflicts fought by the United States. On one hand, it is altogether fitting that we should dedicate a day to remember and honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our allies. On the other hand, the immensity of this number and the loss it encompasses is staggering. Tragic. For each servicemember counted, there are family members and friends, platoon-, ship-, and squadron-mates that are impacted by these losses. Often for the rest of their lives. Those impacts far outlive the length of time one may know the servicemember that didn't make it home. It is certainly true for me, and I know I am not alone in this amongst my colleagues. There is often a fusion of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in people's minds. Simply put, it is never a bad time to thank a veteran for their service, but Memorial Day isn't for those of us that remain. There is also the tendency to focus on celebrating the start of summer instead of remembering the original reason for the holiday. This is not to say we shouldn't enjoy time with family and friends. Quite the opposite. There few better ways to honor a sacrifice than celebrating what it provides. Only a humble request to add something simple to your agenda. During this time off and all the benefits to mind, body and spirit that it hopefully gives to you, consider taking a moment or two to reflect, in whatever manner you choose, on the purpose for and significance of the Memorial Day holiday
