Exciting to see two recent fashion projects that truly bring product-market fit and utilisation while leveraging GenAI and Web3: 1. Adidas & STEPN: NFTs Meet Fitness - adidas partnered with STEPN, a "move-to-earn" Web3 platform, to launch an NFT collection of phygital (physical and digital) sneakers. Owning these NFTs unlocks access to STEPN's gamified fitness app, where users earn rewards for walking or running. This is a game-changer for usability as it merges the physical activity of wearing sneakers with the digital ownership and potential earning power of NFTs - a perfect example of a phygital approach. In the STEPN app, users equip their NFT sneakers on their virtual avatars. As they walk or run in the real world, their phone's GPS tracks their movement and translates it into in-app movement for their avatar. This means the more you move in the real world, the more your avatar moves in the digital world, and the more rewards you can earn. This creates a unique usability loop - physical activity unlocks digital rewards and utility, while the digital ownership of the NFT sneaker acts as a constant motivator to keep moving and engaging with the app. It also satisfies users' needs of belonging and socialising by letting them express their digital ownership in the real world and vice versa. 2. Maison Margiela Tabi Goes Gen-AI: last month, the company introduced a unique experience in their #tabiology exhibition where customers co-created their own digital Tabi designs through personalised AI prompts. The system, developed by Hypno, uses machine learning algorithms trained on a massive dataset of existing Tabi designs. The algorithm identifies patterns, shapes, and stylistic elements that define the Tabi aesthetic. When a customer provides creative input, such as a colour preference or a specific material, the AI can generate new Tabi designs that incorporate these preferences while staying true to the shoe's core design language. Today, the Maison also released a two-tiered NFT collection called #MetaTABI. This collaboration with The Fabricant offers exclusive benefits like exclusive programming with limited edition phygital products, virtual experiences, avatar utility, and collaborative partnerships.  The MetaTABI drop is facilitated using a Multi Token Minter smart contract from Aura Blockchain Consortium. Is digital fashion still a thing in 2024? Now that the massive hype around Web3, Metaverse and NFTs has calmed down, is there a bright future for digital fashion? More importantly, is there much sense in pursuing a career in this field? Yes, because: ✅ Gaming and Virtual reality are on the rise These industries have been around for a while, and are here to stay. Virtual worlds become increasingly integral to our daily lives: say what you will about Vision Pro, but Meta’s new AR device (Meta Quest 3) costs only $500, and it’s just the beginning. Soon we might even have our regular Zoom calls in virtual spaces. The dawn of digital fashion is now: 2024 is the best time for designers to step in and fill in the gap that used to be far more niche. ✅ Digital fashion is where you can truly unleash your creativity. There is only so much you can do with real fabrics and materials – especially factoring in production and budget constraints. In the digital space, you can go as wild as you wish. Digital fashion is a form of art – it does not have to be practical: sometimes its only purpose is to express the artist’s vision and provoke emotion, like that of any digital art creation. ✅ Digital fashion caters to sustainability.  For example, while virtual garments can’t substitute real clothes that we wear, digital fashion can be easily applied across industries like content and advertising. In the future, we may also see couture runways transitioning into the digital space, with only selected pieces (that someone’s actually going to wear!) going into manufacturing.
