It was a seriously cool LA poolside vibe at #LATechWeek Meta Monday: FASHIONVERSE 2.0 XR fashion panel discussion (thanks to Hive Los Angeles LLC and Viceroy Hotels and Resorts) with panellists Joey Lee (Founder and CEO of Pixel Canvas creating photoreal metaverse experiences for brands) Nico Fara (Creative technologist, entrepreneur, and strategist who has combined her love of fashion and immersive tech) and Opé M (AI fashioin designer) As always the question of 'what is the Metaverse' brought a diverse range of answers. I align with Joey's vision evolution of the internet, moving from flat 2D websites to fully immersive interactive 3D experiences where users can engage with brands, environments, and each other in real-time. Whether you think the Metaverse is Web 3, Fortnite or Roblox, the reality is that with gaming on the rise, users (especially teens) are spending more money on digital fashion than ever before as this is a reflection of their digital persona....so digital fashion is a hot topic. All panelists agreed that digital fashion offers a powerful solution for reducing the environmental impact of traditional fashion production. By using virtual try-ons, fashion brands can reduce waste associated with overproduction and consumer returns. Ope highlighted how technology has made it easier for underrepresented designers to gain exposure and sell their work. Digital platforms eliminate traditional industry barriers, allowing anyone with creativity and access to tools to participate in the global fashion ecosystem. Nico emphasized how digital fashion allows creatives to realize their visions in ways that were previously unimaginable, offering limitless opportunities to wear and create garments in the digital space that would be impossible in the physical world. While the tech behind XR is promising, there’s still a gap between the fashion and tech industries. The metaverse is still in its early stages - as Joey mentioned, mass adoption will require lowering server costs and improving scalability for immersive experiences. Virtual Try on (with the exception of accessories for head/hands/feet) is still not there. To make virtual try on work, we require a 3D body scan (the tech is there but the mass adoption is not) , accurate patterns/measurements for each size per garment, and accurate physics in cloth simulations to represent how the fabric would fit on the body. We will get there, but we are not there yet. #immersivetech #metaverse #digitalfashion

🌟 Exploring New Dimensions in Fashion: My Experience with the FashionVerse Collective 🌟 Working as part of the FashionVerse Collective under the Collaborative Challenge module at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, we tackled the pivotal question: "How can Metaverse fashion deliver its social and sensory promise?". Our diverse, multidisciplinary team-spanning areas like Fashion Media, Communication, Sustainability, and Strategic Fashion Marketing, united to create a strategy that bridges the gap between virtual and physical experiences through immersive sensory engagement. Key Aspects of Our Work: - Research & Insights: We delved deep into consumer behavior, exploring how brands like Gucci and Bulgari use augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to enhance sensory experiences. Our findings underscored the transformative potential of integrating scent, touch, and visual storytelling to heighten emotional engagement in the Metaverse. - Primary Research: Conducting semi-structured interviews and surveys, we uncovered that consumers crave more engaging, personalized, and immersive interactions within Metaverse spaces. - Strategy Development: We conceptualized a multisensory pop-up experience for the metaverse, blending sight, sound, and scent to create meaningful connections and memories. Our proposal highlighted augmented reality's role in making virtual fashion truly come alive. What I Learned: This experience honed my expertise in strategic fashion marketing, emphasizing the importance of immersive storytelling and consumer-centric innovation. Through rigorous collaboration and extensive research, we demonstrated how fashion brands can meaningfully connect with their audiences in virtual environments, fostering loyalty and enhancing brand equity. I'm thrilled to have contributed to pioneering work at the intersection of fashion and digital technology.
