The design of the Athena Keystone Console was based on an antique architectural element. A keystone is the wedge-shaped stone at the apex of a masonry arch which keeps the other stones in place by its weight and position. It is the most important stone in the structure without which the arch would collapse. The use of a keystone in architecture dates back thousands of years. It is a fundamental element in arch construction and its significance can be traced through different civilizations and architectural styles. Some of the most beautiful buildings across the world still standing today feature keystones. The Mycenaeans are believed to have been the first to incorporate true arches in their structures. Later the ancient Greeks further developed this architectural technique. The Romans greatly advanced the use of the arch and keystone in their architecture by using arches extensively in aqueducts, bridges, amphitheaters, and other monumental structures. The head of Athena, the Greek goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and handicraft, was often used to embellish keystones right up to the modern times. Shah Gilani, ISFD, based the design of his Athena Keystone Console on one such keystone from an old building. Athena in Greek mythology was the daughter of Zeus. She was named for the city of Athens. The Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens was dedicated to her. The Athena Keystone Console is available in a variety of finishes. The two metal pedestals are made by a casting process. Molten metal is poured into a mold that can be used only once. The rough casting is then painstakingly smoothed by a master craftsman. This is a long and laborious process, requiring great attention to detail. The robust metal construction allows the pedestals to support a heavy three inch thick cast stone top. The pedestals are provided with bronze glides which also serve as levelers – a useful feature to have when the floor is uneven. The use of stone gives the pyramid a textured, organic feel, further contrasted by the sleek modernity of the cuboid's glass and metal elements. It's a bold statement in blending historical architectural references with contemporary design, achieving a balance that is both innovative and harmonious with the surrounding landscaped water features, enhancing the villa's serene and contemplative atmosphere.
