A tug of war? Project managers (PMs) and architects should ideally work in tandem, balancing the technical vision with practical execution. However, it’s becoming increasingly common for PMs to edge architects out of critical decisions, especially regarding client interactions and project services. This dynamic raises important questions about the evolving role of both parties, and why PMs often seem too close to the client for comfort. One of the primary reasons project managers take services away from architects is the perception that they are better equipped to manage time, cost, and client expectations. Architects, with their focus on design integrity and technical detail, can sometimes be seen as being too idealistic or too slow to adapt to changes that might impact the budget or deadlines. PMs, on the other hand, are generally more pragmatic and are trained to prioritise efficiency over perfection. The result? A tendency to exclude the architect when decisions need to be made quickly, in favour of more “manageable” solutions. Another key issue is the project manager’s proximity to the client. PMs are often the main point of contact, which can give them a significant advantage in controlling the flow of information. This close relationship, while useful in maintaining project momentum, often blurs the lines between advocate and appeaser. Rather than challenging the client’s brief or pushing for quality-driven solutions proposed by the architect, PMs may lean towards whatever keeps the client happy—particularly if it’s quicker or cheaper. From the architect’s perspective, this approach can be deeply frustrating. A PM too close to the client can undermine the architectural vision by prioritising short-term gains over long-term value. It can also foster a sense of exclusion, where architects are brought in only to solve problems rather than steer the creative process. Ultimately, both architects and project managers play vital roles in any project, but when PMs sideline architects, it often leads to a watered-down result. Clearer boundaries, and a better balance of roles, would help ensure that projects maintain their original vision without sacrificing efficiency or client satisfaction. However, as long as PMs remain too close to clients and too far from architectural intentions, this tug of war will likely continue.
