Cambodia has taken a significant step towards enhancing international payments with the integration of Alipay+ with its national QR code system, KHQR. This collaboration allows users of 12 international payment apps to make seamless transactions at over one million merchants in Cambodia using KHQR, the country's standardised QR code. The initiative, part of the Bakong payment system introduced by the National Bank of Cambodia in 2022, aims to simplify QR payments for both customers and merchants. Madam Serey Chea, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, highlighted the importance of this partnership in modernizing cross-border payments within ASEAN, stating that it will benefit customers and help merchants seize new opportunities in the evolving digital landscape. Ed Yue, General Manager for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand at Ant International, expressed gratitude to the National Bank of Cambodia for their vision in digitalizing local merchants and the travel ecosystem, which will contribute to enhancing the travel experience for global consumers and boost the local economy. 📲 Which Southeast Asian Country Leads in Digital Payment Adoption? Southeast Asia is quickly becoming a digital payments powerhouse, with countries like Singapore leading the way. At 99% adoption, Singapore's embrace of mobile wallets and digital payment systems is a model for the region. Close behind, Thailand ranks at 87%, driven by the widespread use of QR code payments like PromptPay. Malaysia follows with 85%, bolstered by popular mobile wallets such as Touch 'n Go and Boost. Indonesia and Vietnam show impressive adoption at 72%, respectively. In Indonesia, mobile wallets like OVO and GoPay are rapidly transforming payment habits, while Vietnam’s MoMo and ZaloPay continue to gain traction. Countries like the Philippines (70%) and Myanmar (45%) are catching up but face challenges related to financial inclusion and infrastructure. Despite this, the region is moving toward a cashless future, with increasing digital payment adoption thanks to government initiatives, technological advancements, and evolving consumer behaviors.
