While (4) is a problem that small-town founders are grappling with And, (5) is a challenge that young problem-solvers in Bharat are facing everyday ------------------------------------------------------------------ ✔️Jamshedpur ✔️ Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay ✔️Hostel 13 (6th Floor) ✔️ Entrepreneurship Abhishek and I share quite a few things in common but the love for Jamshedpur is what binds us the most. Not surprisingly, when XLRI Jamshedpur invited us to discuss entrepreneurship at NAVISHKAR - India's Largest Young Innovators Initiative 2024, all we ended up doing was discussing how we could create an ecosystem in Jamshedpur that allows the people from Jamshedpur to work and create sitting out of the steel city. Is there a way to marry 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in a way that becomes a win-win? An opportunity that allows a Techie to work from his Hometown. His Cost of Living goes down significantly and he is prepared to take a salary cut which makes him affordable for his dream company. Does this solve all the problems? We believe it does! Jamshedpur which has traditionally been known as the "Clean City, Steel City, Green City" has everything it takes to become a "Tech City" as well. Look at the number of kids that make it to the IITs and other reputed engineering colleges from here every year. 👉 A Journey of Exclusion Dhruv Suyamprakasam, founder of iCliniq, recently shared his experiences of moving away from Bengaluru twice within months. Despite its reputation as a startup hub, Dhruv faced significant challenges due to biases related to his lack of an IIT degree and limited proficiency in Hindi. These barriers made him feel excluded in a city that prides itself on innovation. 👉 About Dhruv Suyamprakasam Dhruv hails from Coimbatore and ventured to Bengaluru with high hopes for his telemedicine startup. However, he soon realized that the competitive environment was not conducive for his healthcare business, which requires trust and stability rather than the fast-paced pressure typical in tech startups. His journey reflects the struggles many entrepreneurs face when navigating societal expectations. 👉 Facing Language and Educational Biases The lack of fluency in Hindi, India’s most widely spoken language, added to Dhruv's feelings of isolation. He noted that being from a smaller town and not having an IIT background led to judgments from investors and peers alike. This bias against non-IITians can create an unwelcoming atmosphere for many talented individuals in the startup ecosystem. 👉 Societal Bias Against Startups As a founder, Dhruv observed that society often favors certain backgrounds over others, which can hinder the growth of diverse startups. He felt that the pressure to meet unrealistic investor expectations further complicated his ability to establish a successful healthcare service, as metrics like rapid growth are not always applicable in healthcare. Bihar is rapidly transforming into a dynamic hub for startups, gaining recognition in India’s innovation ecosystem. The state has been actively creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurship through strategic policies, infrastructural development, and strong institutional collaboration. Under the leadership of IAS Bandana Preyashi, Secretary of Industries, the state is pushing forward with efforts that nurture innovation, empower entrepreneurs, and provide the necessary support to scale businesses. Key Initiatives Driving Growth: - Financial Support: The Bihar Startup Policy offers seed funding of ₹10 lakhs, post-seed funding of ₹15 lakhs, and matching funds up to ₹50 lakhs for startups raising investments from SEBI CAT-I AIFs. Special incentives are provided to women and SC/ST entrepreneurs, promoting inclusivity. - Incubation Ecosystem: Bihar has collaborated with 21 premier institutions, including IIT Patna, NIT Patna, and IIM Bodh Gaya, to create incubation centres offering advanced lab facilities, mentorship, and funding opportunities. - B-Hub Impact: Managed by CIMP and IIT Patna, B-Hub serves as a co-working and co-learning space, providing entrepreneurs with mentorship, workshops, and networking opportunities. Since January 2023, over 225 sessions have been conducted, engaging more than 100 industry professionals. Success Stories: - Rodbez: A one-way cab booking platform with ₹4 crore turnover, featured on Shark Tank. - Digital Labour Chowk: A platform connecting labourers with job opportunities, boasting a turnover of ₹1.2 crores. - Weavehand: An online platform promoting Indian craftsmanship in global markets. Many people ask me why I am supporting startups while I am an IAS officer. India is often considered an elephant which moves slow and steady. The momentum now is getting higher and higher. A startup is not just a #venture, it’s the expression of our belief in the Youth of India. In 2030 we will have the worlds highest working age population. Imagine if we have ten percent of them as job creators who can harness the power of this youth. It’s is possible at scale only through promotion of #innovation and #startups. If you have any other magical way, please do let me know. P.S. There government job pool is dwindling as we move towards lean government. #AI is only going to make it happen faster then we imagine :)
