Working in the correctional system can be challenging but so rewarding.

Allie is open and honest that the work that Correctional Officers do can be challenging but also rewarding. They work hard to ensure Canadians are safe but also have an impact on inmates’ lives, preparing most of them for returning to the community to be contributing, productive members of society. Listen to Allie in his own words here. POPCRU applauds the DCS for the recent appointment of 1,003 trainees as permanent officials. This is a positive step towards addressing ongoing staff shortages and creating safer environments within our country’s correctional facilities. However, while this is a positive step forward, we would like to reiterate the urgent need for a far more substantial increase in correctional officers we want the number of warm bodies increased from 27,000 to 40,000, and a further 80,000 over four years. Our facilities are severely overcrowded, and our members are stretched too thin, leaving them vulnerable to potential threats. We desperately need more resources to ensure the well-being of both staff and inmates. We urge the DCS to prioritise ongoing recruitment and retention efforts. POPCRU is committed to working with the department to create safer and more secure environments in prisons and will continue advocating for better working conditions for correctional officers. #POPCRU #CorrectionalServices #StandWithOurCorrectionalOfficers #SaferPrisons
