Over the past year, I’ve worked with CPOs, CEOs, and other thought leaders on a series of AI case studies for Collaborative Gain members, exploring generative AI’s role across industries. A consistent theme is that gen AI excels as a tool for individual efficiency—like a brainstorming partner—while few companies are going "all in" (at least not without a human in the loop). Experimentation is happening broadly, which is important, as this tech advances it will become more central to businesses large and small.
Andrei Papancea captures this well: the market both overestimates and underestimates generative AI. It’s not a universal solution, but when applied correctly to the right problems, it can exceed expectations. Generative AI is a tool—not magic—and its success depends on strategic use and solving impactful problems.

3moThe article makes an excellent point about the overestimation and underestimation of AI, but I would argue the balance is more skewed—about 70% underhyped and 30% overhyped. Many organizations aren't moving quickly enough to apply emerging AI technologies to their market offerings. Certain areas of AI, particularly those under-resourced and less explored, hold immense potential that remains largely underestimated. Meanwhile, the perceived dangers of AI often receive disproportionate attention, driven by media narratives that fascinate those unfamiliar with the technology. AI’s true value lies in these overlooked areas, where real advancements could be made if properly resourced and applied.
