The Idaho stop - why it makes sense, and the importance of educating all road users to create clear expectations and shared understanding. "Cyclists are trying to make it all work in a transportation system that’s designed for cars, and not people. Laws need to protect cyclists when 66 percent of drivers break traffic laws when driving (compared to just 5 percent of cyclists)". "The law allows bicyclists to approach stop signs as yield signs so that the rider does not have to come to a complete stop when the road is free from cross-traffic... "collisions involving bikes at stop sign intersections went down by 23 percent after the state (Delaware) adopted its own bicycle safety stop rule (the Idaho Stop)... "(In Florida) people riding bikes complied with general traffic rules (88.1 percent in the daytime and 87.5 percent at night), while people biking reported feeling safer as they traveled through intersections than before. This study–commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation–found that dangerous street design and motorists are what put cyclists at risk, not cyclist behavior... "Bicyclist stop-as-yield laws are important, if only because they allow people biking to minimize their risk, and importantly, get through intersections as quickly as possible... "(Many cyclists are) regular people trying to get where they need to as safely as possible. At the same time, they don’t want to expend more energy than they have to, which means that many will roll through an intersection, even if it’s illegal... "Once comfortable, cyclists will treat every intersection with concern that a car is still going to blow through the intersection... "The bottom line is every person on a bicycle has more to lose — and a greater incentive to yield — when entering an intersection than a driver does. A collision between a car and someone walking and biking will always be tilted against the person outside of the car... "Common sense laws like this only enable more people to get on their bikes". #idahostop #safecycling #cycling #roadsafety Alvin Holbrook @OutsideMagazine https://lnkd.in/g5WsMRvb

Highway Cycles is proud to celebrate AA’s Think Bike campaign’s 10th anniversary. Shockingly, data illustrates that in 2022, 373 cyclists were injured after being struck by an opening vehicle door. Think Bike encourages drivers to follow the Highway Code’s “Dutch Reach”, which is a handy practice for drivers and passengers where, rather than using your hand closest to the door to open it, you use your far hand. This choice sets off a series of five linked actions: reach, swivel, look back, open slowly, and then exit facing traffic, to avoid striking oncoming cyclists. Adam Simmons, General Manager of Highway Cycles, said: “As a team, we are highly supportive of any campaign that keeps our riders safer on the roads. Cyclists make up a small fraction of road users, but account for around a quarter of road deaths, and we welcome AA’s campaign, encouraging drivers to keep their eyes open for cyclists. It’s still as prevalent a problem, as it was a decade ago.” Highway Cycles welcomes all customers to talk to us about cycle safety. Visit: www.highwaycycles.co.uk

🚶 Yesterday, we (the TCA team) practiced what we preach and took a walk along one of our new Walk, Bike, or Roll routes in Tysons. #ICYMI, our transportation team recently launched our Walk, Bike, or Roll campaign, titled “Explore Tysons.” The initiative was created to promote the use of active transportation (walking, biking, scootering, etc.) when getting around our community. As part of the campaign, the transportation team created the Tysons Get Around Guide, which includes four Walk, Bike, or Roll routes. We did the green route. Over the course of the next few months, we will be hosting contests and offering prizes to those who participate in #ExploreTysons. For more information about #ExploreTysons and to access the Tysons Get Around Guide, go to: https://lnkd.in/eJctPRSt #tysons #tysonsva #experiencetysonsva #walkbikeroll #activetransportation #tysonscommunityalliance

Commentary on the new Amy Gillet Foundation - the organisation’s focus going forward, its stance on rider visibility, and the two-way street of sharing the road. "working in four main areas. The first is improving the relationship between road users, which is the overarching but almost intangible one to a degree. And then the others are separating cyclists from motorists – through law, technology and infrastructure" https://lnkd.in/gyk5MHSq

A New Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan👟🚲 Port Moves is an exciting effort to make using active transportation (walking, biking, and rolling) in Port Washington easier, safer, and more convenient. The City has just started work on the plan, which will include a framework of policies, programs, and infrastructure improvements to make walking, biking, and rolling more fun, safe, and convenient in Port. Right now, we are doing citywide public engagement to better understand how Port residents currently experience the City on foot or bike, and where there are barriers or opportunities to improve walking and biking. We would love for you to complete our online interactive webmap at https://lnkd.in/gMp_jvBi. This webmap begins with a brief survey asking how you feel about the current active transportation network in the City (sidewalks, bike facilities, trails, crossings, etc.), and where there are opportunities to make it better. Once the survey is complete, you are able to draw and pinpoint exactly where you have thoughts and ideas. #YourHomePort

Did you know that 60% of adults are interested in biking more on quiet roads with low traffic and separated or protected bike lanes? In contrast, only 5-9% feel comfortable biking on roads with cars or in basic bike lanes. How about you? Today is the last day to share your thoughts on biking in the region and what we can do to grow a Bikeable Baltimore Region! https://lnkd.in/e245KA5j
