It's great to see case study results from New York's public hospital system making plant-based the default meal — 50% of eligible patients now choosing plant-based (up from 1%!), 36% decrease in food-related emissions, cost savings of around 59 cents per meal, and (ready for this one?) 95% patient satisfaction rate! Amazing. I remember working as a clinical dietitian trying to educate patients after they had heart surgery. At the same time they were getting served bacon on their hospital tray, I would be recommending that they avoid bacon due to the saturated and salt. What a confusing message for the patient. Making plant-based meals the default option in hospitals makes sense! It's better for both human health and the health of the planet. Great to know that it can also decrease costs while making patients happy. #plantbased #sustainability #healthcare

Studies show that members utilizing prepared meals post-discharge from the hospital experienced fewer readmissions than those not signing up for the program. However, many members opt out of these programs citing a preference for cooking on their own. They need more independence and flexibility than what a fixed meal program offers. Our solution empowers members with medically tailored recipes and grocery delivery, supporting independence and personalization. Members can stay engaged in their healthcare with a diet designed for their specific needs. 👉 Find out how at https://lnkd.in/dT5qAZFC #HealthcareInnovation #FoodAsMedicine #RxDiet

I am a huge proponent of healthy snacks. Some of my favorites include different combinations of: sliced veggies, hummus, hard boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, berries, nuts, peanut butter, and cheese. When working on an overall healthy lifestyle or managing a specific medical condition, there are many benefits to planned snacking as discussed in this article, in a way that reduces the chance of having that unpleasant feeling of being “starving,” such as: 🍎 More sustained focus over the course of the day 🥕Less overeating of food left in common areas in the workplace 🧀 Less purchasing of snacks high in fat, sugar, or salt 🌊 Ability to engage in more intuitive eating at meal time 🍐 Less late night junk food These are just a few examples! Certainly everyone has unique medical or general dietary needs to be discussed with their healthcare team.

Food Is Medicine and Beyond at HLTH USA In the panel on Here, There, Primary Care, that included Colleen Lindholz of Kroger Health and Kameron Matthews, MD, JD, FAAFP of Cityblock Health, questions on Food Is Medicine and what’s next posed some interesting ideas on what can be done as we move from proactive to reactive healthcare. 👏Incredible news👏In 2022, all 11 hospitals in New York made plant-based meals the default - the results are incredible: 🍎1.2 million plant-based meals have now been served 🍎This cut carbon emissions by 36% 🍎Cost savings were 59 cents per meal 🍎Satisfaction rate over 90%. If patients want to choose meat, they can - but most opt for the plant-based default. An inspiring model that should be copied by other hospitals (and schools) the world over. How do they do it? "All meals are made from scratch at the health system’s Culinary Center in Brooklyn. The culinary team includes Food Service Associates at each hospital who take the patient’s food order, educate them about the flavor and nutrition of the day’s plant-based options, and gather patient feedback about the meal. New recipes are piloted as a “Chef’s Recommendation” and only enter the menu rotation if they achieve an 80% patient satisfaction rate or above. Patients who are discharged from the hospital receive a booklet of plant-based recipes to make at home." #food #meat #plantbased #lessandbettermeat #climatechange #climatecrisis #biglivestock #defundbiglivestock
