“Grandparents have always helped out with school fees, and in a way it’s quite smart because [that money] won’t be subjected to inheritance tax." Our managing editor, Melanie Sanderson, recently joined a conversation in the Telegraph, discussing the growing impact of rising school fees on grandparents who choose to invest in their grandchildren's education. Average annual school fees for day pupils at private schools in the UK in 2022 were over £14,000. With a potential 15 years of fees, if your child attends from three to eighteen, the cost of attending a private school could easily hit £200,000. And that’s before you take any siblings into account! School fees paid by parents are generally exempt for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes, but many will need additional help to support the cost of their child’s education. Grandparents may step in, however IHT implications are likely to be greater for them. If you’re considering contributing to school fees for your grandchildren, early conversations are vital. For many parents, yesterday was the perfect day to show off their kiddos heading to “big boy” and “big girl” school. While I found it amusing that they felt the need to specify "big boy" or "big girl" instead of simply saying their kids were off to school 🤪 It got me thinking about parents sending their children to post-secondary for the first time. These parents may be navigating Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) withdrawals or considering opening an RESP for the first time. Here's a guide with tips and key terms to help you make the most of your RESP withdrawals. The biggest tip - RESP withdrawals are not only for tuition—they can cover all education-related costs varying from textbooks to accommodation & meal plans. Have a read and share it with another parent - whether they are RESP first-timers or RESP OGs 😎 #financialliteracy #wealthmanagement #RESPs #RegisteredAccounts

Here are some I have heard in the past year: -Can grandparents contribute? -Is this good for my kids if they don't go to college? -How long do I need to leave dollars in the account? -What website should I use? -Can I transfer out of a different state? Missouri needs to update its education funding formula. Missouri's outdated school funding formula leads to overfunding in some wealthy districts and allocates money to districts for students who no longer attend school there. Hold-harmless provisions, initially intended as a temporary measure during the transition to a new formula, have now been in place for nearly 20 years. Additionally, the formula only provides extra funding to specific subgroups, like low-income students or those with disabilities, instead of targeting additional resources to all students in need.
