I am on my way this morning to Valencia for the EU Cities Mission Conference 2024 taking place today and tomorrow in Valencia #EUGreenCapital 2024, together with the Annual Forum of Energy Cities and the European Urban Resilience Forum. I am immensely proud to be involved in the EU Cities Mission because of the courage and vision it represents, and its commitment to bold and meaningful action on the ground, so needed in the current context. In 2021, the European Commission launched a Mission for '100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030', aiming to support 100+ cities to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 and to ensure that these cities act as experimentation and innovation hubs to enable all European cities to follow suit by 2050. We are working with 100 cities in Europe and 12 in neighbouring countries, and building synergies with the related Urban Transitions Mission and Resilient Cities Network. EIT Climate-KIC is honoured to lead the NetZeroCitiesEU consortium and platform, working to help cities build transformative strategies, implementation and investment plans, using systems innovation as a driver. Achieving the decarbonisation objective of the EU Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission on scope 1 and 2 emissions alone would mean an estimated 0.7 gigatons of avoided emissions between now and 2040. Above all, the EU Cities Mission sets a precedent for mobilising change at whole of city scale and in planned, affordable, socially inclusive ways. That means jobs and it means hope. In addition to creating beautiful and healthy environments in which to live, this initiative presents an unprecedented opportunity for businesses to thrive and create jobs while ensuring sustainable growth. Investing in climate action will not only help avoid emissions but also create significant economic and social returns. By working together with the industry sectors, we can mobilise large-scale finance and deploy diverse financial instruments to support transformative urban decarbonisation. To realise these goals, we need strong partnerships across government levels, industry sectors and with public and private financing. I am looking forward to two days of sharing learning and ambition amongst cities, between cities and industry, in collaboration with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and with Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association. The Mission offers an opportunity for all involved to play a catalytic role in enabling and accelerating the kind of bold, visionary large scale and local transformations we need to help turn Europe's climate goals into a catalyst for business innovation and job creation, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all. #NetZeroCitiesEU #citiesmission #greendeal #missioncities #MayorsGreenDeal, ICLEI Europe, Eurocities, Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development https://lnkd.in/e2Uu6DQj

Spain and Sweden joining hands to scale the EU Cities Mission 🇪🇸🤝🇸🇪 The EU Cities Mission to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030 include seven Swedish cities; Göteborgs Stad, Gävle kommun, Helsingborgs stad, Lunds kommun, Malmö stad, Stockholms stad and Umeå kommun. The seven Swedish Mission Cities have formed a joint Development Statement, which solidifies the Swedish cities’ support of the visions of the Spanish Mission Cities, as well as stresses the need for a common strategy on “scaling as the new normal” when working towards climate neutral and sustainable cities. The statement was presented at the 1st Swedish Cities Mission Forum in Umeå, Sweden, yesterday. – Cities are at the forefront of the climate transition and key to their success is the opportunity to collaborate, share knowledge and help each other scale what works, says Olga Kordas, programme manager for Viable Cities. Read our article about it, and find the full Development Statement, here: https://lnkd.in/dHuxqwEm The Development Statement is co-developed by the Swedish Mission Cities with support from the Swedish national platform for the cities mission Viable Cities, as well as the Spanish national platform CitiES2030. #CitiesMission #EUCitiesMission ##ClimateNeutralCities

As Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) cities gathered for their #CitiesForward Enabling Environment Workshop in Merida and Fortaleza, we hosted a pivotal webinar for all of our U.S. participant cities. The webinar shed light on a pressing issue affecting both U.S. and LAC cities: Climate Migration. We were honored to welcome Professor Karen Jacobsen from Tufts University, a renowned expert in global migration studies. Professor Jacobsen provided invaluable insights into the intricate dynamics of climate migration, emphasizing its multidimensional nature compared to other forms of movement. Throughout the session, we delved into the distinct climate challenges exacerbated by climate change, from housing shortages to strained healthcare systems, which directly fuel migration patterns, both internal and external. The active engagement of our U.S. city representatives offered invaluable perspectives on the day-to-day hurdles and opportunities they face regarding climate migration in their communities. As our webinar series unfolds, we're eager to explore potential solutions and foster collaboration to tackle the complex challenges posed by climate change impacts. Stay tuned for more updates on our Cities Forward journey! #CitiesForward #CitiesSummit #CiudadeseMovimento #CidadesaFrente
